Has anyone been to Dr. Murray for a muscle/tendon transfer? I had the nerve transfer at Stanford 2 years ago with no deltoid improvement. I went to Rochester a year ago and they said to wait. SS has not come through so $ are a factor. I'm with my parents in Clearwater FL. I came here for ankle surgery which confined me to a wheelchair because of the tbpi. Nobody puts up with you like parents! Especially because I got osteomylitis so the healing is twice as long. Sorry....I'm getting off track...Any info on Jacksonville Mayo? Thanks, Kelly

Hi Kelly,

I'll be interested in if anyone is familiar with any bpi expertise at Mayo Jax. We went to Rochester & everything I read seems to point to that location as "the" place to go within the Mayo facilities. Seems the different locations have different specialties.

The Scottsdale Mayo referred me to Rochester too. But I've been to Rochester and the Dr.s in Jax know it and have my complete file and still want to see me. I'm crossing my fingers that Jax can help. It seems alot of tbpi are in the south, hopefully they are expanding! Thank you for answering, Kelly

We live near Jacksonville and the Mayo clinic has an excellent reputation around here. I have not heard of a bpi specialist there, but would be very interested in taking my daughter (today is her 20th birthday). We are comtemplating a trip to Houston, but would rather drive 30 minutes instead. (By the way, the Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute has the best ortho docs, period). I made my appt.w/ Dr. Murray and he wants to do a muscle/tendon transfer in August. He will be using the latisimus dorsi and the trapezeis (SP). He said it would give me some motion. I'd be able to lift my arm at the most 12" and get some lateral motion. Sounds weird but I'd love to get my arm off my arm pit! I'll have to be in a partial body cast for 6 weeks. Any helpful hints on how to cope with that? Not to be indelicate but I'm generously endowed and can not figure out how or where "they" will be supported. Anyone had this? Thanks, Kelly(F49RTBPI)

Hi Kelly,

I can't speak to your specific question but my son John had gracilis muscle transfers at Mayo Rochester, and during the recovery period it was OK for him to move his arm out a finger's width from his body to wedge a washcloth up in there. Re your question, if you don't hear on the boards just ask the doctor - you know you're not the first with that question!
