I found a AWESOME therapy tool

Post by Lauren (Brooke's mom) »

For all of you parents with toddlers and small children check this out. It is an arm bike called a hot trike and they are VERY reasonably priced!

The telcom pioneers in this area give the bikes to family for free so do ask in your area if they have that program available. Maia got one when she was about 3 years old and it looked so wonderful but her arm wasn't strong enough to "pedal" her whole body or to even hold the hand pedals or to hold the steering - so it went in a circle. We donated it to her therapy group and two years later when she had more strength she was able to use it there and she could do it for about 10 minutes at a clip. It WAS wonderful when she got older. Too bad she got too big for it. Just yesterday I saw a site that had them for older folks but it was $3,000!!! yikes! Each child is different - I didn't tell you about Maia to dissuade you from getting one - but maybe you can try it out first?

not to off topic this discussion but it might be a great site to bookmark and check back to next year. They offer a scholarship maybe this could help some of us get through college.

Francine:

Our therapy center has the larger bikes, Brooke can use it with her arms only, so the toddler one will be great for her. She just loves it and will do wonderfully with it. I was so amazed she could move the big kid bike with just her arms! Anyway, I just wanted to share this with everyone because I think it's the best summer therapy toy for any child that is able to use it!!

Take care everyone!

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: LOBPI. I am 77 yrs old and never had a name for my injuries until 2004 when I found UBPN at age 66.

My injuries are: LOBPI on upper body and Cerebrael Palsy on the lower left extremities. The only intervention I've had is a tendon transplant from my left leg to my left foot to enable flexing t age 24 in 1962. Before that, my foot would freeze without notice on the side when wearing heels AND I always did wear them at work "to fit in" I also stuttered until around age 18-19...just outgrew it...no therapy for it. Also suffered from very very low self esteem; severe Depression and Anxiety attacks started at menopause. I stuffed emotions and over-compensated in every thing I did to "fit in" and be "invisible". My injuries were Never addressed or talked about until age 66. I am a late bloomer!!!!!

I welcome any and all questions about "My Journey".

I do hope Parents remember that this Company provides Scholarships for post-high school Education.
I suggest adding their web site to your "Medical Recrds/or Journal for future reference. I'm sure this company will still be around when you need that education money!..If you haven't started a Medical Juornal/Diary yet, it's still a good time to start one...it will come in very handy when your child is an adult too.

I'm new to this site and am researching college scholarships for students with BPI. My son was injured 8 years ago and lost most of the use of his right arm. He is entering his senior year in high school this year with hopes to attend college in the fall of 2008. You mentioned a company that gives scholarships. What is the company name? Thank you.
