GYM vs Swimming

Post by dino »

hey guys, I have been going to the gym for sometime now, and without consulting any physical therapist or an orthopedist i started training my OBPI arm. The strength has definitely improved a lot, But i realized that when i stop exercising for a while my range of motion improves. Recently i knew the answer when i went to a doctor. he said that while i was training my arm and felt that it is improving i was actually strengthening the wrong muscles. My good strong muscles that have not been affected by the injury have become even stronger than before, while my weak muscles and the ones i was supposed to train were lagging. THis has caused my muscle imbalance to become more of a problem and thus has limited my range of motion. However he said that swimming on the other hand exercises all the muscles in a more balanced fashion, besides it works on my ablity to stretch my arm which will not cause any shortening of the muscle while exercising them (unlike the gym). I would like to hear your opinions on that issue.

I had surgery almost 9 weeks ago and this time we decided to do pool therapy instead of the gym and it has worked wonders for me! what took me a year in the gym I have gotten in 5 weeks in the pool and I am able to strengthen my weak muscles much easier then I would be able to in the gym because of the boyancy of the water. I would reccommend the pool any day! But I would have a therapist set up a home program that you can do on your own. But this way you will know what exercises to do to build up the weak muscles instead of just the strong ones.
Good luck!
