This morning Ella woke up and told me she had boogers in her mouth. I told her to spit them out in the toilet. She went into the bathroom and said she was bleeding. I asked her if it was a lot of a little. (I was sleeping and just woke up from her telling me this...it was around 6:15am). She told me that it was a lot, but sounded calm so I wasn't worried and walked to the bathroom to check her. I find my daughter just standing over the toilet with blood POURING out of her mouth. No exaggeration here. In all honesty, it was POURING like a water fountain out from her mouth. I knew there was a small risk (3-4 out of 100) for post op bleeding from the tonsils being removed. I didn't know it was highest risk at days 8-10. I should have known b/c it was stated on my papers. I just knew the general info for the risk. Anyway, she is at day 8 today. So I grabbed a towel and screamed for Jeff. He was just about to leave the house to get his morning coffee. He ran upstairs, grabbed a pair of her pj pants b/c she only had a nightgown on. He put them on her while I held the towel to her mouth. I was going to call 911, but we would get there faster. I almost walked out of the house with them in my pjs and leaving Hannah behind. I don't know what took over me. I was not "there"....
So Jeff told me to get changed, get Hannah up and he would call me as soon as he got in there and to have my dad pick me up to bring me to the ER to meet them. (We only have one car right now.) So I called and got Hannah and I there about 15 mins after Jeff and Ella went in. Dr was having her gargle (sp?) with ice water. The bleeding was continuing so they called her surgeon, but it was his partner on call. He came in and they got the OR ready b/c they needed to cauterize the area or stitch it depending on what they saw. So here I am freaking out b/c they told me that they had to put her out with general anesthesia again with the breathing tube and all. First thing I think of is the way she woke up last Friday, like a wild bear! I told them about it. They said it isn't uncommon at age 5 to wake from anesthesia like that, but that they would change some things and give her some meds right after surgery to let her sleep it off a little longer. They had to put the IV in her hand so quickly to get her back to the OR. She was awake and watched like such a brave little girl. They took her in back to the OR and it took about 30 mins before they were done. I went into recovery with Jeff and she was sleeping. She did wake up to see us a couple of times, but went right back to sleep. Finally after about 2 hours she was up and feeling tired with some pain, but she was good and not crying or throwing a fit. The way they did it really worked so much better! We let her stay in recovery a bit and then went home. She has been resting all day today. She will miss a couple more days of school and see how she is feeling before she goes back Wed or Thurs. My poor baby has to have a complete liquid diet again for a while. A huge step backwards, but everything will be okay. I asked if it was something I did, but they said no. She didn't eat anything hard, but I still feel like I did something wrong. I guess that is a normal feeling for a parent with such a young child when something like this goes wrong. So to make a long story short, (I know, it's already long!), she is home and resting while I am hoping that she does not bleed anymore and it is good from here until the end of her complete recovery. Thanks to all of you who have been thinking of us and praying for Ella! Please continue to keep her in your prayers for now.

Krista,
I am so sorry to hear about Ella. I can imagine how frightened you must have been. I hope she recovers quickly and is back to herself soon. Take care of yourself too!

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: I am ROBPI, global injury, Horner's Syndrome. No surgery but PT started at 2 weeks old under the direction of New York Hospital. I wore a brace 24/7 for the first 11 months of my life. I've never let my injury be used as an excuse not to do something. I've approach all things, in life, as a challenge. I approach anything new wondering if I can do it. I tried so many things I might never have tried, if I were not obpi. Being OBPI has made me strong, creative, more determined and persistent. I believe that being obpi has given me a very strong sense of humor and compassion for others.

Krista,
What a terrible day this sounds like for Ella, you, and the whole family! I'm so glad it's over now and everyone is back at home. I'm glad Ella had an easier time with the anesthesia this time. Great job by both you and Dad! Tell Ella that it sounds like she was a brave girl.
