Looking for surgeon
Looking for surgeon
My son is 9 yrs. old with a right BPBI. He has been seeing Dr. Shenaq since he was 11 months old and we have been very pleased with his treatment. We have been waiting quite sometime for the gricilis (?) transfer, but it seems Dr. Shenaq has fallen ill and is on medical leave. I am not familiar with many other surgeons and would like some help from other parents. I live in Ohio, but we are willing to go anywhere. Please help with suggestions.

Re: Looking for surgeon
I'm sorry to hear that Dr. Shenaq has fallen ill. At the TCH BPI clinic the doctor who did the gracillis transfer was Dr. Klebuc. I just googled him and here is the link to his private practice:

Check the medical resource page on this website. You will find so many options.
I know that Mayo does gracillus transfers. I would check with Dr. Kozin at the Philly Shriners (we have tossed the idea around, but are not there yet). I know that the group in California that Dr. Pearl is with does them as well. However, they are part of KaiserPermanente and unless you are insured with KP it costs a bundle just to get in to see them (I know, we did it!).
Really, start emailing the doctors and ask them if they do it. Or if they have a relationship with someone who does.
Good luck,
claudia
ps. Dr. Shenaq has followed Juliana as well. We adore him.

Re: Looking for surgeon
We were going to call Dr. Shenaq and set up an appointment for a visit with my daughter. Im sorry to hear he has fallen ill. Does he have another dr in his practice to see patients or do you know when he might br returning to the office??
Re: Looking for surgeon
From the information we received from his office, they are not sure when he will be back and are referring to other doctors if we wish. Dr. Shenaq is my first choice but I will also feel okay about a doctor that Dr. Shenaq trusts enough to refer his patients to.
Re: Looking for surgeon
I saw the posts about the gracills surgery and went to the mayo web site they give a brief description of the surgery, they make it sound so simple, what are the gains and possible losses of this surgery does anyone know?? Has anyone had this surgery???? what was the castings and recovery like??? My OT said she wasn't sure if this would work for Frankie or not but its sounds possible barring any problems due to the way his bones have formed ect.
Thanks Mare

Gracillus is a complex and difficult surgery. There are gains and losses for any surgery.
You really need to contact the doctors directly as this surgery is not one that is entered into lightly (not that any of them are...).
Good luck,
claudia
