It was an emotional moment! lol I think it was great. Now we need a story line about Shoulder Dystocia and a resulting BPI. Sandi

I thought it was great at the end when he was talking about recovery...some never recover he said. So true!! It meant alot to hear a show in mainstream society say it.

I was really glad to see that Greys Anatomy talked about brachial plexus. I was so stund that I had to rewind it and play that part over again. At least we are seeing alittle more talk about it, we have to start little to get to the big one.

My roommates got me watching that show and BPI was mentioned in the last episode of season 2 when Dr. Burk got shot, they described it pretty well then and I was even more suprised to hear them talk about it some more last night. The sad thing is even after explaining it to my roommates, they still dont get it that this inury does not ust go away. They think Burk is being a whimp. Needless to say I was a little peeved after that comment.

It is really nice to see that TV shows are finally starting to talk about BPI's though! GO ABC!!!

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: January 1980 Yamaha RD200 vs 16 wheeler truck, result, 1 totally paralysed right arm. I was 21, now 54. I had no surgery, I don't regret this. Decided to totally ignore limitations (easily done aged 21) adapted very quickly to one handed life, got married, had 3 kids, worked- the effect of the injury on my life (once the pain stopped being constant) was minimal and now, aged 54, I very rarely even think of it, unless I bash it or it gets cold, then I wish I'd had it amputated :) Except for a steering knob on my car, I have no adaptations to help with life, mainly because I honestly don't think of myself as disabled and the only thing I can't do is peel potatoes, which is definitely a good thing.

I don't know about the USA, but in the UK tbpi bad enough to need surgery outnumber obpi needing surgery by about 10 to 1. Road accidents are just one way tbpi can be caused, there are literally hundreds of others. Tbpi is a very very common form of bpi and unfortunately most tend to involve multiple avulsions, sadly lower plexus injuries are more common than upper plexus in tbpi, with the result that functioning lower arm, hand and fingers are not an option for large numbers of tbpi, even with surgery. The pain is so bad for some that suicide because of the pain has been documented by at least one bpi specialist as being a concern for tbpi.
Not trying to detract from obpi, just providing some awareness about my injury and a possible explanation of why they chose to highlight tbpi. This is the first time I've seen it mentioned on tv. It's fantastic that they used the right terms too, it's a devastating injury no matter how it's caused and awareness can only help us all
