Excersizing my tbpi arm ?

Post by catchatrain »

Hi All,
On one of my few Dr. visits ( really )he advised me that I needed to work on my range of motion in my shoulder.I was told to stretch as far above my head as possible, using my good arm to help. Also to strech out parallel asfar as possible, using my good arm to help.
My question is this.If I'm doing all that stretching, what ( if anything ) is that doing to all of the nerves that are all out of wack anyway.??
I understand the importance of excersize.Just a made me wonder.
Thanks everyone.

Hi Marshall,

It won't make any difference to the nerves, but should stop your arm from seizing up and going stiff. It will also help a lot with the circulation since it will probably be poor anyway due to nerve damage. This in turn will keep the temperature levels as normal as possible in the arm, and help with healing if you injure it, like burn it without you realising.

Have a look at these exercises on here http://www.tbpiukgroup.homestead.com/ph ... cise1.html These stretches and exercises are based on the patient information sheet that is given to every TBPI that passes through the RNOH at Stanmore in the UK.

This particular hospital and BPI centre is world renowned for their pioneering surgery. They have been treating BPI for around 50 years now, so they know what they're doing! ;0)

Hope this helps a bit...

Hi Marshall,
I don't know if I qualify to be on this forum anymore. You see, I was one of the lucky ones who just had a temporary paralysis to the shoulder area. I had a thing called Parsonage-Turner Syndrome that left the brachial plexus in a state of trauma and therefore paralysis for about 6 months. Part of my PT was daily stretching of my bad arm with a putter and my good arm. They said it would help with muscle memory and range of motion. I am happy to say that it worked for me. It wasn't fun- it hurt like crazy to force the arm through its motions, but now I feel like I have 95% of the range of motion back. I hope you get along well- I think about the good people on this forum who have had bad things happen and it usually brings tears to realize how fortunate I am and how I wish you all could have my type of healing. God Bless, Mark

Hi Orion,
Nice to meet you.Hope all is good as can be.=)
I use to play alot of golf,Great game.I'd like to try that.Hell it can't hurt eh.
Would have to tape ( or something) my hand to putter though. The large bone that ties to your wrist from your arm? Well it's kinda like missing. Most of it anyway. It has left my hand frozen stiff.Cant move it.But I could strap that puppy to a putter and go at it=).Thanks.....Marshall

Hi Marshall,
Good idea with taping the putter to your hand. It seems that people on this forum are good at improvising things because the injury isn't too well known. I found a neoprene 'sling' that took the weight of the arm off the neck muscles. Good luck with it all.
