Kim, I just put Global Palsy in the Google search box and a bunch of sites came up.

I read a couple to see what Global Palsy was. It is when both the upper and lower arm are affected.

I have more to say but will on your shriners post.

Kim, I looked closer at the Google search, and these are the sites that came up. It appears they only give one sentence to Global Palsy.....and that is, it affects both the upper and lower arm. I had never heard the term, but in that case my daughter had global palsy too.

When all 5 nerves are affected it can also be called 'total'palsy. I'm just wondering, as your daughter has been without treatment until now-did she actually want more movement before you found this site? Or was it finding us here that gave her the idea? I am very interested in whether older kids opt for surgery given the choice as mine was not interested at all and felt he was just fine as he was. I think it was more me that wanted the surgery for him. He is 10 years old. He was not happy that we felt his arm needed improvement when to him it was just his arm and he is very well adapted to it, in fact until we brought up the idea of surgery he said he never felt there was anything wrong with it, his arm was just different. In that way we are sorry we ever mentioned it. We left it for him to decide when he is older, we are hoping long term results from some of these newer surgeries will be published by then.
Thanks for sharing.

Have you ever thought that at 10 he might be too little to decide for himself and that later on the surgery might not have that much result? When he's older he might regret not having done surgery. I understand it may be a difficult decision but that's why there are specialists. Perhaps a bpi specialist can help you all decide what's best and your son might change his mind if he listened to specialist's advice.

Hi All, I tried the web sites that were listed and I can not find anything about Global Palsy. I went to google and all that I can come up with about Erbs Palsy. So can anyone tell me where I might find something so I can get a better understanding. Thanks ..Kim

Kim, why don't you email Dr. Kozin to get a better understanding. It was my understanding from him that it simply means the entire arm is affected not just c 5 and6 which are the ones associated with "erbs palsy." I would think that any child who sufferes a severe injury has a "global palsy" because the surrounding nerves if not actually torn would tend to be stretched and affected.
