At what age can/should we start TES/NMES/E-STIM

Post by Shannon03 »

If your child is using one of these machines at what age did they start? We have discussed this much with our OT (but plan to this week). I've seen alot of discussions about this type of therapy but know very little. Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks

My understanding is that TES can be started at a very early age. It is a low current estim to help stimulate the muscle to grow. It is worn at night when the child sleeps. NMES is not to be started until about the age of two. The child must be able to tell you when they feel the current so as not to cause burns. This e-stim is to strengthen the muscle that you all ready have. So alot of children do the TES at night and then do the NMES during the day to build up the muscle they are getting to grow. That is what my son does. He is now six. Here is a good site that explains more.

Hope this helps some.

Hi Shannon,

We started doing TES on Evan at 15 months. If you decide to do it and can't find anyone in your area who is TES trained, I can share our therapist's contact info with you.

Shannon,
We started using TES at 16 months of age. We were told that by using this, Matthew's internal rotation may decrease. That didn't happen, but we did see some other good results.

Thank you all for your comments. I was able to speak with our OT about these forms of therapy and and we will be looking into them more soon.
Thanks again!
