when my son had rehab he told the physio that he wished to take driving lessons and he would need a modified car the re-hab cenre sent him home with a list of various charites that would possible help him meet the cost. but he lost the information. does anybody have details of charities or organisations that would be willing to help because im sure a lot of you are aware it cost about £600-£1000 to have the car modified depending on the make of car and as he is not able to find a suitable job with his bpi disability he has very little money. anuy help or sugestions would be very much appreciated.

I have never been able to afford one of those infra red steering balls with switches etc, my modifications were done very cheaply by attaching an 'arm' to the indicator switch that I can use from any position on the steering wheel without taking my hand off, which is what you need to drive legally in the UK. I spoke to me local OT dept about where to find someone to do the work, my dad did it in the uk and here in New Zealand a local engineer did it for $50. It doesn't need to cost a fortune to be legal.

Hi Metty...the best place to start with getting info about possibly getting help with this is MAVIS http://www.dft.gov.uk/stellent/groups/d ... 27699.hcsp and Motability http://www.motability.co.uk You can find links to these on the TBPI Group website too; http://www.tbpi-group.org I'll be updating the links section on the site soon, so there will be other links that might be helpful. Another thing worth trying is approaching your local Rotary Club or British Lions.

Sorry I can't be more of a help; getting grants for this sort of thing can be pretty difficult; I've tried for other people. When our charity is more established, I'm hoping that we can help in a more practical way with this kind of thing. Let us know how you get on...

I just had a thought when I read your post. Maybe those of us that do work should sponsor another tbpi that needs this kind of help. Just think about the good will that that would bring about.
