Anyone who had diabetes during their pregnancy give me any advice? I just found out I failed my 3 hour glucose test and I am going to see some nutritional specialist next week. - Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: Hi! I am Laura, the mom of Tyler, who has a ROBPI. I've been a member of this site since 1998 and owe a great deal to the wonderful people in the UBPN community who have helped us along the way get what we needed to get done for Tyler. Tyler is now 14 years old and in the 9th grade. He's a super bright kid and loves his video games. Tyler had the mod quad surgery with Dr. Shenaq shortly before he passed. That was his first and only surgery. Now that he is older he is requesting additional surgery. He'd like to be able to supinate. Our goal is for Summer 2013.

It's great that you are going to see a nutritionist. That's probably the best thing you can do---just follow the diet they give you. I had gestational as well, but was able to monitor it just fine with my diet. Your off to a good start. Good Luck!

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: I am ROBPI, global injury, Horner's Syndrome. No surgery but PT started at 2 weeks old under the direction of New York Hospital. I wore a brace 24/7 for the first 11 months of my life. I've never let my injury be used as an excuse not to do something. I've approach all things, in life, as a challenge. I approach anything new wondering if I can do it. I tried so many things I might never have tried, if I were not obpi. Being OBPI has made me strong, creative, more determined and persistent. I believe that being obpi has given me a very strong sense of humor and compassion for others.

I want to wish you a great and healthy pregnancy and baby. You are doing the right thing by seeing a nutritionist and possible make sure you exercise on a regular basis.

HI!
I am a type 1 diabetic now and just found we are expecting our seventh!
The biggest thing is to keep your blood sugars as normal as possible. I can't stress that enough. When I had GD in earlier pregnancies, even though I was fairly well controlled it caused problems. My third weighed 10#. My fourth had respiratory distress syndrome, the fifth has cerebral palsy and my 6th weighed in at 11#.
As far as how it affects you, I progressed from hyperinsulenmia to gd to type 2 and finally my pancreas has pooped out. I definitely could have made better choices and slowed the progression but having gd definitely increases your chances of developing diabetes later on.
Get a glucometer and check your sugars. (I check mine as much as 10 times a day.) If you are a gestational diabetic then exercise will probably be your best tool.
I just finished reading a really good book (I got it from Amazon) called Medical Management of Pregnancy Complicated by Diabetes. It is expensive and you may want to just check the library if you don't need it for insulin dosages and such.
It is great that you are meeting with a nutritionist, but do your own research and check your blood sugar after you eat. So many "experts" still use outdated diets with way too many carbohydrates.
Best of luck to you and your precious little one.

Congratulations on # 7. I am my mother's 8th and I weighed 11 lb 14 oz. Of course they did not know she had GD nor did they check for it. She did not develop diabetes until her early 60's. I wish you a healthy and happy pregnancy.
