It might be the story of my son John, since there has been a good bit about him on these threads. He avulsed all five nerves in Nov '02 & had surgeries at Mayo Clinic MN in Feb & Apr '03. You can read a little bit about what was done in the below site, and John's second surgery was filmed for a documentary on Mayo - so we have that on DVD or VHS if you're interested.

I think what enables Mayo to offer the degree of sophisticated options is largely because it's three surgeons working together, having different specialties... not sure how that can translate to other clinics but it's certainly worth exploring.

John can now bend his arm & make a fist. He had six nerves transferred: 5 functional & 1 sensory. The functional transferred nerves are to power John's bicep, tricep, deltoid and the two gracilis muscles moved from his legs (not missed unless you ride horses). The movement of making the fist involves all fingers moving as one unit at the same time the thumb closes in... i.e. not individual finger motion. The sensory nerve is so he'll know when he's touched something with his fingers.

Donated nerves are phrenic, contralateral C7 & four intercostals, and John doesn't "miss" them. Ultimate recovery is still ~ 1 1/2 years away with continued therapy to build movement & strength.

Email me offline if you want to "talk" more. Good for you to learn all you can before talking with your doctor.

Take care & let us know how we can support you.

Ellen
