Nerve Transfer Surgery

Post by Jess & Kyle »

My husband (who I posted about before) just made an appt w/Dr Nath for a nerve transfer surgery to regain movement in his elbow and shoulder. I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with this type of surgery. Also, we will be traveling to Houston the first week of March. Any suggestions on hotels that are close to the hospital? Thanks!

I posted a reply on the TBPI board. I am sure you will get some input here as well.

You can take a look at Francine's website. It is a little more geared for kids going to TCH, but it has tons of info and lists all the hotels. The site is:

Hope this helps some. And Best wishes to your husband.

Good luck with the surgery! We'll be there at that time, too.
I know everyone's experience is different, but I'd advise against Holiday Inn. We've stayed there several times, and it was a little on the gross-and-scary side.

We stayed at the Crowne Plaza in November, but are planning to stay at the Holiday Inn in May. What problems did you have with this hotel. The Crown was nice, but too expensive for what it offered.

WE statyed at the holiday Inn and it wasn't fancy but I didn't find it gross and scarry I found it a good price with breakfast included and free shuttles to and from the medical centre. I found it a little depressing because it seemed there was alot of cancer patients there staying for treatments at the med. centre and it was sad to see them, but other than that it was okay, not fancy, but okay. If your looking to save money it should be good enough - if you like your surroundings a little newer and luxurious and don't mind to pay for it then maybe look elsewhere it didn't strike me as unsafe in anyway - I don't think there are a bunch of druggies or criminal activities happening there - not that kind of scarry just a little old and not at all fancy.

Kyle, I wish the best to your husband as well I am visualizing white light of protection to help you in this journey.
I have a question for you, and anybody who can answer, I just spoke with Dr. Nath about my brother getting nerves transfer surgery too.
Besides insurance are other resources somewhere that help with the cost of this major surgeries?.
Thanks,

Does anyone know if the nerve transfer surgery is only being done on adults??? My son is 8, but never had primary (but needed it). I'm just curious if a nerve transfer would help to innervate what he does have....I understand all about muscles dying after a certain amount of time........but I wonder if a transfer would help gain movement with the muscle he does have.
Thanks!

We have stayed at the Holiday Inn the last 2 trips (both in the last 6 weeks). On our trip for surgery, they bumped us up to suites and it was VERY NICE. This last trip we got a regular room with 2 beds and was still just as nice as the Marriott and the Crowne. They don't have continental breakfast at Holiday Inn, but the restaurant is nice and kids eat free.
