Nerve Transfer Surgery
My husband (who I posted about before) just made an appt w/Dr Nath for a nerve transfer surgery to regain movement in his elbow and shoulder. I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with this type of surgery. Also, we will be traveling to Houston the first week of March. Any suggestions on hotels that are close to the hospital? Thanks!

Re: Nerve Transfer Surgery
What type of nerve transfer is he going to do? I just had a nerve transfer with Dr. Nath is September 2003 to get some biceps back as well! It was a very minimal procedure, small incision in my arm pit. I had part of the median nerve plugged into my muscleucutaneous (sp bad!) to feed to biceps hopefully! I have much more sensation now and the muscle is tightening up but still not really doing anyhting. Feel free to ask me more questions! As far as hotels go, we stayed at a hotel, dont remember the name, which was a couple of miles from The Methodist Hosptial, were the surgery will probably be done. We booked this hotel online, I believe it was like $65 a night. My mom went with me and we rented a car. I really think that it can be done with out a rental, really all depends on the money situation! Thank GOD for moms and dads! If you want to email me personally I can probably help you with more info. If you want to email me your phone number, Ill give you a call and we can chat about it. Look forward to hearing from you!

Thanks so much for the info! I'm not really sure on the specifics of the surgery ~ my husband just made the appt today. We are hoping it works well. I am at work at the moment, but I will email you when I am at home. Again, thanks!

Re: Nerve Transfer Surgery
Jessica,
I recently had the same surgery that Kyle is getting (I think). I had two nerve transfers done. One was the spinal accessory nerve to the shoulder, and the second was the ulnar nerve to the biceps. Too early to tell if was successful (5 weeks post op). But I am back to where I was before surgery. Today was my first day back to work since surgery. Feels like I never left, don't know why I was so eager to get back. My trapesious is weak from loosing part of the spinal accessory nerve, but it will bounce back. And my hand was complaining about loosing some of the ulnar nerve, but that seems to have subsided quite a bit. I feel some pain in my shoulder that wasn't there before the surgery. I hope that’s a good sign, that the muscle is starting to innervate. Only time will tell. Hope this helps...Karl...

Re: Nerve Transfer Surgery
Jessica, Dr. Nath has a website and I think they even help you with travel arrangements. You will see on the left side of the website. http://www.drnathbrachialplexus.com/injury/
I am his patient, but since I live Houston I didn't need their help on this. I am pretty sure they can help. I know for sure there 2 hotels right in the medical center walking distance from the Methodist.

Re: Nerve Transfer Surgery
Hi Emmerson! Are you new here? Welcome to the boards! Just a suggestion to you, you might want to post a NEW TOPIC on the TBPI boards so all the people will see you are new and it is a NEW topic and maybe more people will respond to you. They can find you easier. So, you had a motorcross accident at age 8? I really hate that. I hope you are doing ok now. I am interested in hearing about you and your surgery and such. I havent met anyone on these boards close to your age with a traumatic injury. They are all mostly adults. I am so excited you posted, because my son James, age 11 wrecked on his 4-wheeler last year and got his injury. Im sure you and he would have alot in common! If you are only age 10, and you are posting here you must be a pretty terrific kid and very mature to want to post and talk to people! Really, I cant get James to talk to anyone about his injury, its like he wants to forget about it and hope no one notices his arm.

Re: Nerve Transfer Surgery
Hi Emmerson,
I had surgery 8 months ago to get my biceps and some shoulder muscles working. I'm still waiting for that surgery to be successful, so I'm glad to hear yours is starting to work at 9 months. I'm also impressed that you can swim all the different strokes. I'm still trying to figure out how on my own. Maybe that's the problem. Maybe I need to find someone who can give me lessons. Any advice or pictures would be appreciated. Good luck with your training for the paraolimpics. Cheers....Karl....

Re: Nerve Transfer Surgery
My son has had two nerve transfer surgeries. We were just in Houston in July 2004. We stayed at the Best Western at 6700 S Main. Their phone number is 713-522-2811. You can see TCH from the hotel b/c it is only like two blocks. We actually walked to our son's appointments. The hotel was clean and their staff was pretty friendly. They offer a cheap medical rate. Be sure to mention the medical rate.
Good Luck!!
