Our 17 month old daughter had mod-quad back in Aug. 03 and we sent in her post surgery tape back in Dec. Heard back from TCH and she needs to have a 3-D CT Scan to rule out dislocation and/or long acromium process (hope I spelled correctly) is this common? She needs to be sedated - any advice?? We are scheduled to go this Wednesday to a local hospital - will they be able to tell us the results? Any information/advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: 3-D CT Scan
Christi:
We just had that 3D CT scan done. Our son is 2 and scheduled for caps/acromioplasty in March.
Regarding the CT scan, they knocked him out with drugs via enema. He went right to sleep in my husband's arms. The CT scan took about an hour, but it was a 4-hour process altogether, what with checking in, waiting for Danny to wake up, etc. He acted a little drunk for the rest of the day until the drugs wore off.
So that was the easy part! The HARD part was getting the hospital to get the RIGHT film to TCH. I checked and re-checked before we ever brought Danny in to make sure they could do a 3D view, bilateral shoulder, bird's eye view. Oh, yes, they said, no problem. Well ... they sent TCH the wrong films, and it took multiple phone calls and calls from Dr. Nath and more calls to get the right film sent. I guess the plain words on the prescription weren't direct enough! Anyway, this particular hospital then assured me that they've finally figured out what Dr. Nath wants, as other patients of his are now coming there for the CT scan. So it might be good if you double-checked with your hospital to make sure they send the right films the first time.
Good luck to you and your little girl!

Re: 3-D CT Scan
Christi - the CT scan takes only a minute or two - how about asking about the sedation... maybe you can do it during a known nap time so that she doesn't have to be sedated? and if she does have to be sedated does it need to be heavy duty - can it be something very light - something oral?
If they give you the CD of the 3D cat scans you might be able to view it yourself on your computer.... and you can email the files to Dr. Nath as well. It's interesting to see. You have to make sure that it's actually 3D however... sometimes they mess up and don't run it through the 3D software - you don't want to have to do it again...
The radiologist there might not understand what he's looking at...and I don't even think that Dr. Nath needs the report- just the scans.
When Maia had hers they said that she must have been malpositioned because both sides are so different... uh duh!! hahaha I wish it was as easy as malpositioning!! lol
good luck...

Re: 3-D CT Scan
Just wondering why the acromion was not checked at the time of the mod quad? Do they not look at the shoulder at that time?
Re: 3-D CT Scan
They are checking during MQ. I know a few children who have had partial MQ w/ Acromio. The results have been remarkable. Go to...
www.injurednewborn.com
message boards. Type in Acromiopasty in the search. Parents have pictures posted of what the scars look like, the splint, and pics of the kids.
Please keep in mind that the overgrown bone growth on the clavical & acromion was just discovered about 7 months ago. Bradley had 1 centimeter taken from each bone. He can supinate, clap his hands normally, among many other things he has never been able to do before. Progresss is still continuing. I never thought his arm would look this normal. I couldnt be happier. E-mail Dr Nath at www.rnath@bcm.tmc.edu he is very receptive to answer questions regarding this procedure.

Re: 3-D CT Scan
Our local hospital would not read the 3D CT scan, the radiologist actually ordered an MRI after he saw it and said he was not comfortable reading the 3D!!! I said that is ok we only need the scan and I sent it to Dr. Nath to read. No need for an MRI which is more traumatic than a 3D CT scan. Dr. Nath does not need the report. Stacey

Allison,
You mentioned a "partial mod quad", do you happen to know what that means? I am not familiar with it. Do you know what parts of the mod quad the children you are referring to had and didn't have?
It is so exciting to hear such encouraging results. Please keep us posted!

When they do a mod quad - they do only the portions that they feel that particular child needs. It might be one thing or four things or two things...
Re: 3-D CT Scan
Well, Reagan had her CT scan yesterday and she did wonderful. She had to be sedated and was asleep five minutes after taking the drug. No reaction or side effects once she woke up, we are so relieved. Now we wait until Dr. Nath receives her scan and reviews it. About how long should we expect to wait to hear back? Thank you all for your advice, I truly appreciate it!
