Preparing for Trip to TIRR-Questions

My daughter Renee will be having the mod quad surgery at TIRR on 2/26/02. Is anyone going to be down there at that time. (She has a clinic appt. on 2/25/02.) Are the patient rooms at the TIRR similar to the ones at TCH? Is TIRR near TCH? We walked from the Holdiay Inn on Main St. to TCH for her first surgery and we didn't know if that would be possible again. It may be too cold to do it but we are from upstate NY so we are used to the cold! We wanted to avoid renting a car again to save money if possible. Does anyone know if there is a grocery store near the Holiday Inn because we are getting a suite with the full kitchen so we will be able to eat in more. Also, does anyone know how much a cab will be from Houston Hobby airport to the Holiday Inn? Thanks for any input!

Hi Julie - I'll try to answer the stuff I can... we've never been to TIRR so I don't even know where it is but try looking for a map of the Houston Medical Center online or for TIRR and I'm sure there will be a map somewhere.

The one thing I can tell you is that the Holiday Inn has a good shuttle and can get you to a grocery store - there is quite a large one down the road (but not walking distance)... the shuttle will also take you to TIRR (we actually took it to TCH because we had so much stuff with us).

The taxi cost from Intercontinental to TCH is 43.50 - there is a specific charge for each zone. Hobby is MUCH closer to the area so it should be much less. Maybe Hobby has a site?

Good luck,
francine

if I find any of this stuff - I'll repost

TIRR (The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research)

In The Texas Medical Center

this is a page about hobby and getting to and from:

http://www.ci.houston.tx.us/has/hou_directions.html

this page is a great map actullly that shows both airports in relationship to the medical center

http://www.ci.houston.tx.us/has/hou_directions.html

and here is the map of the Texas Medical Center (not Houston)

http://www.tmc.edu/maps/map-tmc-00.html

My son had the mod quad last Aug @ TIRR. I like it, but then again it was the only hospital we been at @ Texas. It was small and nice. We took the shuttle from our hotel to TIRR, they ran almost round the clock. We took a cab from International to our hotel and I think it was about $50-we didn't rent a car. We walked a lot. TIRR has a nice play room, so when the kids start feeling better they can get up and go play. We also found a pool table on the first floor near the therapy room, my son loved it. I had a nice experience @ TIRR. Good Luck and where in upstate NY are you from? I am from upstate NY too..... :)

Hi Julie,
My daughter had primary surgery at TCH and modquad at TIRR just last March. We were very happy with our experience at TIRR. We found the nurses to be a bit less busy and therefore able to give Amanda more personal attention. Also, Nancy Conti is the OT who will most likely be doing the splinting and she is just awesome! They also had "pet therapy" during the splinting process. A volunteer brings her dogs in to distract the kids. I'm not sure if that was something they always do or if we just got lucky. Anyway, it was very nice and helped a lot since my daughter loves doggies. E-mail me if you have any specific questions.

We haven't been to TIRR. But we did live in Houston for a year to get the services of TCH a little closer to home. There are plenty of groceries stores near TCH and like I read, there are great shuttles from almost every hotel. I know for a fact that Hobby is much closer that intercontinental so don't panic. It may actually be cheaper to get a limo, they sometimes are, especially if you have alot of people in your party. Good Luck !!!

Hi, we were there in Oct. and it was a very good experience. It is a smaller hospital, but very friendly staff. Say Hi to Alice, she is a very nice Op room nurse. They did do the pet therapy when we splinted and our little girl loved it. The splinting is not as bad as some would say. They are really good at keeping everyone entertained. Don't forget to bring a stuffed animal for Nancy to splint for your child. She will gladly do it. Nancy is very nice. We used the shuttles to get around. You know the free buses that go around the medical area. We stayed at the new Best Western and had a good experience there too. TIRR is nice because it was very quiet and not busy. The only thing we didn't care for was the Opertion waiting area. Very small. We just paced the floors anyway, so it didn't matter, I guess. Hope some of that helps.
