Taping Protocol

I haven't been on the boards in a while and have not have time to check over other threads, but the OT's recommend taping our son's arm and winging shoulder. We have not have past success with cooperation related to removal. So he runs when he sees the tape, although the taping really helped position. So, today I bought self sticking ace bandages in two sizes and cut them to fit and taped with them. I used the kinesio tape to secure the ends. I will let you know how this works for him. Removal of the tape is just murder for these kids and makes placing the tape somewhat a less than desirable prospect. I am also thinking of trying to make something out of polyurethane to wear to see if that works. I have to go to the fabric store and check out what they have. Let me know if anyone has any good suggestions they have tried. I know that someplace in Denmark makes some kind of shirt for winging, but TCH did not recommend using as they felt they were too restrictive.

I've been hearing that people use Milk of Magnesia on the skin first for taping. But sounds to me like your son is already past allowing you to do this anymore.

We use just Kineso Tape. It comes off very easily after a few days. I just wait for the ends to start to roll up and then peel it right off!

I have a ? What is the taping for? Katie has always had winging and no one has ever suggested taping and I wondered if it was for the kids that had had surgery or the ones that did not, etc...

We were told after mod (that is when the winging really started) that the winging meant her shoulder joint was "in place". The winging got better as her arm drooped more and more but after last night's splint removal the winging is really bad.....

We use the Taping to help "remind" the muscles how to work. I think that is how the therapist put it. The kinesotape does not hold the sacpula in place. I think it is like placeing gentle tension to that area to encourage the muscles to move properly. I am not sure if I am explaining this right! We are using the tape to prevent winging (Ian only wings a little hardly noticeable). I have heard recently (from other parents) that winging can be considered good... meaning that they is no dislocation of the joint. So now we have yet another point to ponder with the treatment of our children. Here is what I think... Kids who do not have a BPI don't having the winging problem. I am still using the taping because I want to encourage Ian to use his arm as normally as possible which is suppose to help with creating a normal joint. It is good to keep in mind that Ian has not had any surgery to this point. And most people would say that he has a mild injury.

Christy - you got it right.... the winging got better as the arm dropped.... meaning as the arm dislocates, the winging goes away - this is what Dr> Nath told us. Those kids who are not winging may be dislocated.. So now that Katie has had her capsulodesis - the winging is bad and that is a good thing for now. He warned us before the surgery that Maia's winging will be bad too but it will be considered a good thing.

We are using the Kinesio taping too to help the scapular winging problem.

When I called that 800 number and ordered the tape, I also ordered the "Removal". It is also in a small box. I used it to remove the tape, it really works.

Just called the company and order the tape removal.

We used the Remove, also called Uni Solve with lots of sucess in getting the tape off. After about 3 days it's not that bad anyway. I got the little wipes and Atticus did not seem to be uncomfortable at all with removing the tape. It does take a couple of minutes so a good distracton is my reccommendation. We saw great results from the Kenisio taping, about a 30 or 40 degree increase in range in just a couple of months. He's on a break right now, but his OT said we'll probably start again this month sometime.

Christy, when Dr. Nath reminded me again just before Nicole's Capsulodesis surgery that she would have winging, I asked him about taping. He said NO -- absolutely not. So, there are times when taping for winging is recommended and other times when it's definitely contra-indicated. Now that I think about it, I think I should mention to TCH that they list scapular taping as a contraindication for post-op protocol. If a child has had surgery, I would hope parents would check with their child's surgeon before trying anything like taping, but you never know. -Tina

Hi my daughter also gets taped and I found that an easy way to remove the tape is to soak baby oil on the tape and put an old shirt on and let her play. After about an hour the tape practically falls off. Hope this helps you all.
