new bp injury

About 5 weeks ago I fell down some stairs, broke my shoulder and received bp injury. The shoulder is healing fine (as my orthopedist not so diplomaticly put it "that's the least of your worries"). I am getting physical therapy five times a week and am now out of a sling. Have been doing hand therapy for three weeks and just started arm therapy. Most of my hand and all fingers are numb. The physical therapists are all very positive and tell me that from what they've observed in my ability to move my
fingers and arm, I should have a good recovery. I had the standard nerve test three weeks after the accident. My orthopedist and the MD who did the test are both very non-committal about my recovery. I will see a neurologist in two weeks. I think I'm just beginning to realize how serious this injury may be. I just found this board - writting about the situation seems to help. I'm wondering if there are others out there who are, or were in a similiar situation? I realize that no two injuries are identical but just getting some support and/or information from others would be wonderful. I'm determined not to let this push me into depression - but sometimes wonder if I can stick to that determination. Hearing from others would be great!!

I have what I guess I could describe as fairly good movement in the wrist, elbow and shoulder. For example, the therapist just gave me an exercise yesterday to be able eventually to touch the top of my head - presently I can get as far as just above the nose. Right after the accident, I had no movement in the fingers - now I can make a fairly good fist and can touch the end of the fingers with the thumb. I have very little control over the fingers ie I can pick up, hold and squeeze a piece of sponge - but that's about it. Thanks for your interest. If what I'm describing gives you any insight, good or bad, as to the chances of at least a partial recovery, I'd be glad to get your input.

Well, obviously I'm not a doctor. But from what you say it seems to me you should be very confident with the recovery u are going to get, as ur therapists are.

U must take into account that it is a slow process that can even take years. For example, I'm 3 and 1/2 years post-accident, but I still feel my arm is still getting stronger, although very slowly.

If after 5 weeks u already have so much movement, then I think u should be ok, and may even make complete recovery.

Keep exercizing it, and good luck.

Once again Athos said it all. Best of luck for a rapid recovery. Red Wilson
