car adaptations??

Post by cbe411 »

Hey guys! I was just wondering if anyone is using any sort of adaptations for driving?? My PT has been talking to me about it lately. I am 2 years post accident and have been doing fine without it. Why would I get one now?? Any insights???? Thanks!

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: January 1980 Yamaha RD200 vs 16 wheeler truck, result, 1 totally paralysed right arm. I was 21, now 54. I had no surgery, I don't regret this. Decided to totally ignore limitations (easily done aged 21) adapted very quickly to one handed life, got married, had 3 kids, worked- the effect of the injury on my life (once the pain stopped being constant) was minimal and now, aged 54, I very rarely even think of it, unless I bash it or it gets cold, then I wish I'd had it amputated :) Except for a steering knob on my car, I have no adaptations to help with life, mainly because I honestly don't think of myself as disabled and the only thing I can't do is peel potatoes, which is definitely a good thing.

Hi Courtney, I use a revolving ball on the steering wheel and have an adaption so I can indicate with one hand, I have no use of my right arm so driving without adaptions isn't an option if I want to drive safely. Different countries have different laws and in the UK and here in NZ I wouldn't be allowed to drive without adaptions as a safety issue. I don't know what the law in the States is, maybe you should check. I can't see how someone with one arm could control a car without adaptions as well as someone with two arms, and for that reason I would always get adaptions for my own peace of mind. I could manage without the adaptions but it wouldn't be safe, I drive my children around a lot and I'm on the road when other children are travelling home from school, no way would I risk driving unadapted. I know you guys have lots of long straight roads, maybe it's not such an issue there. Happy driving! :0)
