We did botox this past Dec. Thomas responded well it took it about 3 to 4 days till we could staighten his arm out some. His problem is no tricep just bicep. We got his arm out straight by serial casting. Then started e-stem the botox has worn off and his arm is going back up. It worked he is using his hand more but the down side is it has worn off it only last 3-6 months each child is different. Hope this helps you can e-mail me if you have any ?

Dear Barb:
We have used botox twice on Juliana. Her triceps suddenly came in much stronger than her biceps after we did biceps lengthening surgery.
The botox only worked for 4 weeks the first time, but we are working on 6 weeks already for this time and no end is in sight.
Botox takes 4-7 days to get to full effectiveness and should last anywhere from 4-8 weeks, usually 6-8 weeks.
The idea behind it is that our kids' brains are always learning and when we use the botox to paralyze a too powerful muscle, we allow the less powerful muscle time to do what is was intended to do. The "pathways" that allow the less powerful muscle to work can be remembered by the brain. The hope is that, over time, the muscle can function using the new pathways.
Very important to the success of botox is the use of estim on the weaker muscle.

If you have any questions, you can email me.

By the way, I am very happy that I have done this with Juliana.
If you find a physiatrist who handles cp kids, you might find them more willing to do botox, as they might have used it with their cp kids.
