Question about coughing!

Post by Monika »

Jessica, who suffers from her robpi, also has a very hard time getting over colds, especially when they move down to her upper respirtory area. Particularlly, coughing is so bad that she often throws up. Any over the counter cough surpressant just makes it 10x worse. And the doctors are no help, of course...think I'm over reacting...

Does any one have any suggestions? Please!

Monika,

I'm LOBPI with injury to all 5 nerves of the brachial plexus. Many of us adults have compared stories on this and found that we also have this problem. My colds usually settle into my throat and trigger asthma, and the cough that does not want to dissipate. It is the only time I need to use my asthma inhalers.

YES...YES...YES!! Joey has had an awful barking cough since he was born. He would cry (and when he was a baby he cried a lot) and it would inevitably turn into a terrible barking cough and everyone around me would think I had this baby out with pneumonia! His colds also always settle in his lungs and along with that he has a nebulizer for asthma that the colds trigger. He had his first surgery when he was 2 years old. Before that he would cry...start coughing...stare at me and pass out... I Kept taking him to the drs. and they kept telling me he was holding his breath with a temper. I will never believe that because I saw the look on his face. He was as scared as I was. I dont think he could take that gasp for air because of the nerve damage and then on top of that everything tensing up from the crying. After he had the primary surgery done at age 2 he had one more spell of the passing out not long after that and then that was the end of the passing out praise the Lord! Our new pediatrician sent him to an ENT and they put a scope down through his nose and checked out his throat and such to make sure everything was ok down there and everything turned out normal but I do think the coughing/asthma is related to the nerve damage. It has got to affect how things develop on that side of the body in a baby if the nerve flow is interupted for a time.

I should add that the nebulizer has helped us to keep his coughing in check when he gets a cold. At the first sign of the cough I start with the breathing treatments with zopenex and it really does help. Cough suppressents arent good to use from what I was told with asthma anyway...

Monika - coughing to puking is often a sign that the child has asthma. How about asking the doc. Maia has the same thing - actually we're both having a tough time and we're fighting (not really) over who gets the air compressor nebulizer first!

hope you can figure it out,

Thank you all for your response, I'll have to bring it up again with our new doctor here in New Mexico. I just hate having to put Jessica through anything else. Does anyone know of a good website for info about Asthma?
