Bill,
You will be very pleased with the Mayo Clinic. That's where we have been taking our son. The docs there are the best in my opinion. We have always stayed at the Kahler Inn and Suites when going to the clinic. It's across the street from the clinic and they have a Caribou Coffee off the main lobby. Rooms are nice and staff is great. Plus, it's nice to be within walking distance. Other restaurants that are good- Chester's, they have wonderful burgers; Canadian Honker, everything is good there; and Jimmy Johns has really good subs and is off the lobby of the Kahler Inn also.
If you have any other questions, let me know.
Best of luck to you!
Carly

if you're getting surgery & family or guests are coming, this place is very convenient & close to St Mary's (where the slice & dice happens). You can usually bargain by calling for rates...

Thanks Carly and Chris,

I'm not going for surgery yet...just diagnostic testing and team consultation, so am staying at the Kahler Inn and Suites this time. I do have to go to several locations like Gonda and St. Mary's depending on the test, so I will check out the options for a return visit.

Thanks for all the help. I'll let everyone know how things go.

Jeff

Hi all,

Wow, what a week at Mayo for my wife and I. We went up there for what we thought was testing and consult only, but the whole team of Dr's Spinner, Bishop, Shin, and Reedy ended up spending a couple hours with me in evaluation and the gameplan they agreed to for me was to have a sural nerve transfer to reinnervate my tricep...and they said they could do it tomorrow (which was this past Thursday!!). So we scrambled to change flights and hotel reservations, and had the surgery. Right now I'm sitting in O'Hare airport waiting for my connecting flight home. I'm very sore but also very excited that I could get this Done literally in a flash. That is why I took a few days to update on my visit.

By the Way, now I've been to both St Louis and Mayo and for my experience, Mayo was far, far more complete. At Mayo, I had 2 MRI's, 2 EMG's and a 2 hour evaluation where there were literally 8 doctors in my room, including Spinner, Bishop, and Shin the whole time. And they gave me several options and paths, and we decided on one and got moving. At STL, they didn't run a single diagnostic check and didn't think they could help me with my tricep.

Now hopefully I get my tricep function back in 9 - 12 months, and then they will work on my hand. I already have regained bending my elbow and rotating my wrist so they are very optimistic.

I won't get into a debate on who is better...for me it was Mayo. I just hope that each of you gets the level of service and treatment that I received regardless of where you go.

Personally, I used the info on this site posted by Christopher and Angela to help guide and inform me, plus info from many others for hotels, food, getting around the clinic site, etc.

Let me know how I can help or answer any questions.

Regards - Jeff
