The June/July 2002 issue of Mayo Today has an article about a family with a son who was born with BPI. The article talks about primary as well as mod quad surgery it also has some info on what BPI is. Overall a very good article, It also talks about TBPI in adults (mostly due to car accidents). The only part I was upset about was that is stated "The injury occurs in the birth canal"

I apologize in advance for my rudeness and language. I have a visual of the headlines: "Killer Vaginas Tear Nerves in Infants Necks Causing Arm Paralysis".
Happened in the birth canal, hmmmph. You'd think that the Mayo Clinic could get it right? Everyone is scared of teling it like it is.

I just received a note from the Neurologist I use... he sent me a copy of information he received from the Mayo Clinic.... He sent because he thought it might be helpful to our community...
This paper talked about ther Brachial Plexus Clinic and it also stated "motor vehicle accidents and birth-related injuries" as the major cause... It also mentioned the need for immediate attention...
Now I will have to check their website for information.

Can anyone tell us who wrote the article? Is there anyone we can write or contact. This kind of stuff is sickening and it really does hurt our cause, and it doesn't seem to be getting any better - only worse. Together, we really have to fight this or we will only lose and more children will be injured everyday.

you know what - you are absolutely correct and maybe this is something that UBPN as an organization should address - may give the letter more clout.
Nancy - are you reading this?

Hi
I just called the Mayo Clinic but the person I spoke to had no information about any article... I think we should read the article before we write letters.
Perhaps the person who posted this would be kind enough to put a link to the story on this thread then we can read it and follow through if necessary.
The Mayo Clinic has a team approach to care and treatment of brachial plexus injuries.
The team includes Orthopedic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Physicial Medicine and Rehabilitation Neurology, Neuroadiology,Neuropathology, Physical and Occupational Therapy -
I spoke to the Doctors Appointment Secretary... she told me the clinic has been opened for a year and the doctor has been operating for about 5 years on bpi paitents and they treat both children and adults/obpi/tbpi...
That is all the information I have for now. The paper I have -- refers to the causes being motor vehicle accidents and birth related injuries.... and the need for early intervention...
Please post the link to the article... it would help
