License Renewal in New York

Post by Kelly711 »

My husband is up for license renewal in New York State. This is the first time since his accident and the loss of the use of his arm. On the renewal form it asks if there has been a lost use of leg, arm, foot, hand or eye since the last renewal. When investigating this further, I discovered that he needs to contact the DMV to meet with an examiner to determine if restrictions need to be made on his license. Has anyone else had an experience they would like to share to help me further understand what process we can expect.

Thanks

Kelly,
Driving semi with birth erbs for years. Maybe I can help  Its one thing to renew the license but it really does come down to what adapted devices ,really are needed ? Has Tim, been driving with his limitation? What is he having problems doing like reaching for con-trolls , steering? I may know of devices that might help. In iLL for my CDL I needed a spinner Knob for the steering wheel as a restriction.

Tom,
Tim currently doesn't use any assistive devices to help him drive and has been driving ever since he was injured. His injury is in his right arm and he does not have any significant use to aid in driving so when we purchased a new vehicle for him, we made sure that it had all the controls on the steering wheel such as radio controls and hands free cell phone as well. Other than that he doesn't have any difficulty driving. I guess that we are just concerned with what they will restrict him to.

Thanks for Sharing

i was thinking that in indiana, there is a restriction that says you can only drive an automatic if you have problems with an arm or hand that prevents you from driving with both hands. dont know anything about NY. but that is a possibility.

In ill its true about automatic restriction to. I had it to but then I learn to drive a stick in semis  Got the restriction lifted, learn how to adapt. Adapted devices of all types and some rehab places do have adapted driving instructor. If you are driving with your limitation and there is a adapted mite help get it. ;) There is a adapted device called a cross over for turn signals. The thing to remember to me  is you can skip that box if you can drive safely with your limitation. The only way I past a Dept. of transport-ion physical ever 2 yrs. was by years of safe driving in spite of my erbs from birth. If your safe your safe  ;) If you still have your cycle license keep it, you never know :D ;) Some times it really is  when other limit you base on what they think you can do in life with your limitation even doctors :| But I always enjoyed a good Fight
Sometimes you need to adjust your seat to reach better ;) :D Power seats are great for this more types of adjustments you can do that will help, I think  ;) I all ways hope what I say helps??
