New to board

Post by Katie C »

My name is Katie and I am almost 11. My family were on here for several years when I was first born and due to legal issues were told not to post. That is done now.

It is time now that I need to talk to others like me so my family sent me to this board. I am trying to learn how to deal with this injury and taking care of myself with alot of limitations.

Just wanted to say hi and I will be back to visit. Any places you or anyone can recommend for me to talk to thanks.

FIrst question.

I don't want to have any more surgeries but if I don't gain some strenth or missing ROM I will have to just to take care of my own body. Any suggestions on what you do to work out?

thanks

katie

Hi Katie,
Welcome to the message boards :)

I love swimming and it great exercise for your BPI arm. Growing up I swam for fun, took ballet and figure skating, and competed in figure skating until I was 28 years old! (I am 35 now).

I had one surgery when I was 14, a tendon transfer, which helped a bit for ROM.

Good luck, keep posting!

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: LOBPI, had surgery when I was 9- they moved muscles and tendons from one side of my arm to the other side. I can lift my arm to about my eye level, can't straigten it all the way and can't completely supinate my wrist.

hello! i was 9 when i had a tendon transfer... thats the only surgery that i had, and i think it gave me more range of motion.... all i know was that my doctor was going for the 'normal' look while i was walking (swinging my arms back and fourth like im supposed to) i did karate when i was younger and i got my black belt when i was 14. i love boating, i went white water rafting a few times when i was 11-13 too! just find fun things to do :) you dont always know you're exercising your arm when you are having fun!

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: LOBPI. I am 77 yrs old and never had a name for my injuries until 2004 when I found UBPN at age 66.

My injuries are: LOBPI on upper body and Cerebrael Palsy on the lower left extremities. The only intervention I've had is a tendon transplant from my left leg to my left foot to enable flexing t age 24 in 1962. Before that, my foot would freeze without notice on the side when wearing heels AND I always did wear them at work "to fit in" I also stuttered until around age 18-19...just outgrew it...no therapy for it. Also suffered from very very low self esteem; severe Depression and Anxiety attacks started at menopause. I stuffed emotions and over-compensated in every thing I did to "fit in" and be "invisible". My injuries were Never addressed or talked about until age 66. I am a late bloomer!!!!!

I welcome any and all questions about "My Journey".

WELCOME KATIE!!!,
There are some 13 and 14 year olds who are posting on the "Adults With Obstetrical Brachial Plexus Injuries"
Perhaps you can post Questions there too? and the girls will "find" you back.
I found that swimming was/is my best excersize

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: I was born with bpi, I am now 13 and have had two surgeries for my injuries. My mother found this website 13 years ago and I attended the second camp (not that I remember, I was only two) Now it is time to me to handle my injury instead of my mother.
