Break and rotate humerous???
Has anyone had or heard of a surgery where they break your humerous and rotate it out to help correct a problem of your arm rotating in to far?

1 surgery at age 14 (latissimus dorsi transfer). In 2004, at age 28 I was struck with Transverse Myelitis which paralyzed me from the chest down. I recovered movement to my right leg, but need a KAFO to walk on my left leg. I became an RN in 2008. - Location: Montreal, Qc, Canada

It's called a derotational humeral osteotomy, or simply humeral osteotomy. They do it often for OBPI in older children/adults to get better positioning and more function.

I had this done about 25 years ago at Mass General Hospital, they put a plate with some screws over the bone. I think it did put my arm in a better position, i have a traumatic BPI,from a hunting accident 30 years ago.

Thanks for your responses. I'm a little nervous about having this done.

Re: Break and rotate humerous???
I've considered having it done, but my doctors said that the arm may still continue to rotate after surgery. So I thought I'd wait it out since there isn't a time constraint as to when you should have the surgery (at least in my case). I still think it would be useful, and if I ever get another major surgery, I'll probably get that done as well.
Best of Luck!

Re: Break and rotate humerous???
They are planning to fuse my wrist and do a tendon transfer to try and fix my hand at the same time so it's a lot to take in all at once. I don't know why but the whole rotating my arm I'm just not sure of. It might just be that the doctor doing that part of the surgery wants to video it. I just worry he hasn't done a lot of this surgery or maybe he wants to use it as a teaching tool. It s a teaching hospital. Thanks again for everyone's input.
