HELLO, I am very excited to find this network. My daughter BPI occurred in 99, well in July I found out she needs another operation. My question is does any one know if insurance provides an in home teachers. Would that be something that would be available. Expected time is 6 weeks in a cast, and 12 months of therapy. I just do not want to have her fall behind.

In my state (PA), the school district provides an in-home teacher for anyone who is sick, not able to return to school for whatever reason (or expelled!) for no cost to them. My eldest daughter is actually a "homebound" teacher and she has a combination of kids home sick or kids who were kicked out.
However, why can't your daughter return to school? The kids usually feel better by the end of the week of the surgery and then they can return with some accomodations. Does your daughter have an IEP or a 504 plan? Call the school and talk to them about it. They should be able to provide her with accomodations that may mean having a personal aid, a scribe, a peer buddy to help with books, lunch, etc.
best of luck with everything,
francine

In Texas they provide at home teachers as well for kids who can't go to school for long periods of time for illness etc.. But like Francine said I am not sure why your child would not be able to go to school a few days or maybe a week, depending on the pain, after surgery.
I know with my own child she was back at school a week after surgery and even my oldest went back a week after her knee surgery.
Best of luck.

Before my son had his triangle tilt last year, we called a meeting with all of his teachers, school nurse and principal and basically wrote out a new 504 to take him through the rest of the school year(surgery was in Nov)
We wrote in all precautions, extra set of books at home, friend to carry his books at school, extra time in between classes, someone to carry his tray at lunch, etc. Our regular OT went with me and she had some great ideas that the rest of us might not have thought of.
He had surgery on Thursday and was back to school on Monday.
Good luck!!
