Advice needed for muscle transfer

Post by Brandon_3 »

I just had an emg at the request of dr. nath as he thought that i might be a good candidate for muscle transfer. As long as I had a nerve below the elbow to connect to. Well I have nerves all the way to my hand. I was told in the beginning that I was completely avulsed and nothing could be done. 4 years later with no surgeries I've had alot of function return. Anyway what I want to know is how to get ahold of mayo to tell them my story. Dr. Nath is only planning on transferring a single muscle to my fore arm. i want to find out if mayo will do two muscles forearm and triceps. I believe i have the nerves for it. Anything will help.
thanks
Brandon

PLEASE check with Mayo!

It was my research that led me there! As for muscle transfer I feel they have the most experience. I was unaware that Nath did muscle transfers... how many has he done for TBPI?? PLEASE ask this question!

Good luck and keep us posted!!

I asked my Dr about muscle transfers. He sai for me they are not possible at this point or the procedures havent really been perfected.

Thanks peoples, I have spoke with Mayo and i am in the process of sending a complete medical history for the Doctors to review. As to the question about Dr. Nath doing muscle transfers, he doesn't do them, a different surgeon at his clinic does them and its a Dr. Guitierez(sp). If I go anywhere I am going to Mayo if at all possible. Its weird, I spent 4 years learning to accept the fact that I will be like this for the rest of my life. And then I found out I have a 50/50 of regaining the use of my hand.

I actually pulled up Mayo and the BPI docs there. Got their contact info. What did they ask you to send them for eval?

Hey Racer, If you call them they are very helpful. They will tell you what to send and who/where to send it. I think I sent them a CD with my CT, Xrays, and MRIs. I was able to get that CD from my local hospital shortly after. I also had an EMG from a local nuerologist, so I sent the results as well as any reports from any doctor that I was seeing - physical therapist, orthpaedic surgeon....you get the gist. Hope your seeing some recovery, take care. JJ
