- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: LOBPI. I am 77 yrs old and never had a name for my injuries until 2004 when I found UBPN at age 66.
My injuries are: LOBPI on upper body and Cerebrael Palsy on the lower left extremities. The only intervention I've had is a tendon transplant from my left leg to my left foot to enable flexing t age 24 in 1962. Before that, my foot would freeze without notice on the side when wearing heels AND I always did wear them at work "to fit in" I also stuttered until around age 18-19...just outgrew it...no therapy for it. Also suffered from very very low self esteem; severe Depression and Anxiety attacks started at menopause. I stuffed emotions and over-compensated in every thing I did to "fit in" and be "invisible". My injuries were Never addressed or talked about until age 66. I am a late bloomer!!!!!
I welcome any and all questions about "My Journey".

Yes, weight contibutes to possibilies of Shoulder Dyscotia which cause Erb's/OBPI injuries; yes if you read some of the General Message Forums, most moms chose Cesearian birth for succeeding children.Your "wonderings" are right on, Tom.

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: I am ROBPI, global injury, Horner's Syndrome. No surgery but PT started at 2 weeks old under the direction of New York Hospital. I wore a brace 24/7 for the first 11 months of my life. I've never let my injury be used as an excuse not to do something. I've approach all things, in life, as a challenge. I approach anything new wondering if I can do it. I tried so many things I might never have tried, if I were not obpi. Being OBPI has made me strong, creative, more determined and persistent. I believe that being obpi has given me a very strong sense of humor and compassion for others.

Re: Over weight baby at birth and Erbs ?
I just want to add to what Carolyn said. Yes a C Section can prevent bpi injury but should not be necessary in all cases. If proper birthing maneuvers are used there would be no injury. I was almost 12 lbs also and so was my brother he had no injury and I have a global injury.
If the mother is not flat on her back, given too many drugs and if the doctor uses the many maneuvers that are possible then a large baby can be delivered safely and uninjured.
There have been some very small babies injured. There is no way to control the babies birth weight. I had large babies. I did not gain even the expected weight gain for a pregnant woman. I smoked when I was pregnant ( it was allowed 40 years ago) and my last baby was 9 lbs. It is a matter of the doctors using the proper maneuvers and when they fail then go to C Section.

I thought about the blame issue. I dont want you to think you sould not let it out you should do so and then you need to let it go. I have a life time of the blame thing. Oh its real, being let down does have angry thought. I still at 56 have issues of blame. There are just things in life where they just do let you down. be angry and including me! I need to let it go and the angry will go away to maybe? THATS LIFE?
Well I gave It my best shot,
Tom

You are absolutely right Carolyn! That is a much more appropriate subject for the private board. I copied this thread to the private board and edited out my post on this one!
