chewing fingers

Post by tylersmom »

I was wondering if anyone has had experience with their child chewing their fingers on his or her affected hand? My son, who just turned 4 years old, has just recently started to chew on the top of his fingers to badly that they are raw and infected looking. It's like he does it and doesn't even notice that he is doing it---almost like a nervous habit. Any suggestions or info would be greatly apprectiated.

My son did the same thing when he was little...pickling alum works ok, they don't like the taste....but it is not all that great for them....I also just had to nag him to death and stop him when I saw it....I would like to think that it had to do with nerve regeneration....

my son did the same thing. We wearned him several time. We tried to find out why he was doing so. He did it because he was angry at his fingers which didn't work and do what he wanted so he wanted to punsish them. We told him very very often that he had to be gentle, that the fingers wanted to work but can not because the message "work" do not come into the muscle. We tought him to be nice that he had to reward the fingers/hand every time they did something/moved.
He used it now to suck on it before bedtime. He also had some handcream on it to make it soft and in that way (he had to do it himself) he was gentle to it.
Unfortanly he still can be very on nice to his hand and fingers.
Try to find out why he does it, and talk.

good luck

You know that feeling when a cut is healing and it itches. Well, that is similar to the feeling one has with this. The itching is deep and NOTHING can relieve it but the urge to chew and mutilate the hand is very strong.

I experienced this recently after I had the mod quad and the feeling is indescribable. It is a very deep itching feeling. Rubbing seems to help somewhat.

I must have had this as a child as well because my mom told me how I chewed on my hand. And throughout my life whenever I'm nervous or stressed about something, I chew on my fingers. I've never been able to break the habit.

My daughter Ashley, is 6 1/2, and still chews her fingers and if she is not chewing she has her BPI hand at her mouth just hovering! I think for her it is also a security thing?! As well as being itchy, I mean!
