What do your children do "their way"?

What special adaptations or things do your children do their own way and how do they do it?

I cant seem to think right now but I know before we got the wii she would play playstation games with the controller upside down and would actually win at games I tried it and never could figure it out.

I know now she is left handed and she still plays the wii games right handed but in her left hand. Weird.

I just keep remembering stuff as im typing LOL, when she started getting around she would scoot on her butt with her feet going a hundred miles an hour, she got where she wanted too with no problem.

If I think of anything else I will let you know.

Things I do "my" way.
I have normal hand/wrist control, but cannot get my LOBPI arm up above my head without help.

Doing my ponytail: I put my LOBPI hand up on my head and use my right hand to brush my hair up to it and it holds the hair there, then I put the elastic around it using both hands. If my arms slips off my head, I have to start over...
I can braid my hair too, French braid and regular ones, but for French braid I need to put my arm on my knee OR lean back on my pillows (or whatever I am sitting on) to be able to let my LOBPI arm move down as I braid. (This took me until I was 15 to figure out!)
Ponytails done by myself too me until I was about 12-13 yrs old.

Washing my hair: I do it all one handed

Putting jackets/zip up sweaters on: I put my LOBPI arm in first. Same for shirts... LOBPI arm in first, then right side then over my head.

Getting things out of a high cupboard or shelf or hanging things that are higher than my shoulder level: I put my LOBPI arm up using my right hand and then I can do what I need.

I'll try to remember more things... let me know if you have any questions!
(I should try to tape the ponytail thing and put it on YouTube)

Marieke,

Please do! :) The french braid thing, too! That would really help parents of the girls! Aria is only 2 1/2 and I'm already trying to figure out how I will help her learn to do these things!

Maia's plays the cello in a very differnet way. Left hand uses the bow, right hand on the strings - so in essence she is playing backwards because we didn't restring the instrument. You can see here do this on www.youtube.com/franlitz.

Maia shampoos with one hand - I have a separate shampoo bottle for her - it is a squeeze bottle. I take a portion of shampoo and fill the bottle with water to dilute it so she gets a more consistant washing and the shampoo gets to all her hair. I also have her a scalp scrub brush (large rubber bristles) to really scrub her scalp better.

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: LOBPI. I am 77 yrs old and never had a name for my injuries until 2004 when I found UBPN at age 66.

My injuries are: LOBPI on upper body and Cerebrael Palsy on the lower left extremities. The only intervention I've had is a tendon transplant from my left leg to my left foot to enable flexing t age 24 in 1962. Before that, my foot would freeze without notice on the side when wearing heels AND I always did wear them at work "to fit in" I also stuttered until around age 18-19...just outgrew it...no therapy for it. Also suffered from very very low self esteem; severe Depression and Anxiety attacks started at menopause. I stuffed emotions and over-compensated in every thing I did to "fit in" and be "invisible". My injuries were Never addressed or talked about until age 66. I am a late bloomer!!!!!

I welcome any and all questions about "My Journey".

I've started to use Shampoo & Conditioner ALL-in-1& always use a sweeze bottle ,attached cap that flips open.I also wash with 1 hand. ..Not as lucky was Marieke; I cannot use my LOBPI hand anywhere near my hair as it contracts tight and pulls out gobs of hair as I get it to release the "Claw grip")...(we adults have dark humor names-humor helps & heals BTW..it's a healthy thing)

I've suggested in another thread..if a girl wants sooo badly to shampoo her own hair but due to injury, she cannot at 1st,and gets too frustrated, have her use her allowance or do some chores and let her go on her own to a "no apointments" salon and just have them sshampoo only, it's very inexpensive and does alot for her self esteem!! Eventually she'l find her own way of doing it without the frustration factor.
Frustration used to stop me until I got sooo desparte to do it on my own.

Let a girl and boy, chop veggies anyway they can and ignore looks in a salad.Ignoring appearance of veggies and ,a"Thank You "go along way to help self esteem believe me,please. Also suggest getting their own one-handed tool for holding veggies or other items to cut/chop. There is a whole site for one-handed utinsels on Amazon thru UBPN's link. Start early;.I was never alowed in thw kitchen to help cok & that's I'm "big" on that...(only a suggestion, of course ;) )

More later as I think...

HUGS to all you great Warrior Moms!

Lexi holds a camera in the strangest possible way. She holds it with her left hand on the right side, and somehow manages not to have any part of her hand in front of the lens. It actually looks painful. But it must not be, because I catch her with my Powershot all the time. LOVES taking pictures of anything and everything (pictures of my closet, the sink, pictures of pictures, the toilet, etc. ) Ever notice that ALL cameras have the button on the right side?

Juliana also used to scoot! and FAST!!

She uses her left knee to prop up her left arm/hand to keep it in a useful position.

She used to turn the pages of a book with her feet.

She also puts her affected side into a coat first.

She washes her hair by putting her left hand on her head, then puts the shampoo on with her right. Then she mushes the shampoo with both hands (sort of).

She plays tennis. She serves by putting the ball on the strings of her racquet at the top and then "throwing" the ball up and then she swings and serves.

She types with only two left fingers on 1/3 of the keyboard and has the right hand cover the rest.

there is more, i just have to think of it!!
