I have 2 other kids and never heard of this type of birth injurie. We are still trying to find more information about it.My son's OT did not have much experience with this, and he has been seeing her for over a yr.I had just changed OT's and this one seems to no a bit more.
I was told its not as common for the left arm to be the injured one.Is this true?
His OT also wants me to order an ark brace but our INS won't cover it. Any one have idea's on that? Also if any one has any kind of advice that you think would be helpful or no of any test my son should have done please let me no.As I had said this is new to me and my family.
Thanks

where are you from in Illinois? We are from the Peoria area and have an excellent OT that is very knowledgeable in Brachial Plexus Injuries.

Heather,
I'm sorry that your child was injured, but I am glad that you found this site. This site has a wealth of resources and information and support! Are you currently seeing a BPI Specialist? As far as your question about the left arm being injured. Most brachial plexus injuries occur to a baby's right arm (60%). This is because babies most commonly "present" into the mother's pelvis in the left occiput anterior position (LOA). The LOA position is when the back of the baby's head points towards the mother's left arm while the baby's face is oriented towards the mother's right buttock. With 40% of the injuries being to the left arm this is not as common as the right arm, but definitely not rare. My son has a left BPI. He is almost 8 months now and had nerve grat surgery at 3 months. You can email me if u want at
stlbpi@yahoo.com.
