Hello everyone,
We received our welcome package today from Mayo!! I think that I have already read it twice!! Does anyone know if they will go ahead with surgery if need be while you are there? The reason I am asking is that we have appointments scheduled for tests and a consultation and since we live so far away traveling again soon maybe difficult and expensive. So if anyone can enlighten me on this it would greatly be appreciated, well all the help we receive from this board is greatly appreciated.

Rosaline,
We were in the same situation in April, 2006. We are from PA. The BP team work with you and the insurance company to get the surgery scheduled ASAP. My daughter needed nerve and muscle transfers after all the preliminary testing and we were there a total of 3 weeks. Let them know of your situation and they are most helpful. Good luck. I think it may depend on the results of testing and their subsequent treatment plan, and also how far out you are from the date of injury. If they feel he needs surgery soon, then I think they will be very willing to work with you to schedule him ASAP so you don't have to make a second trip. On our first visit, they felt that my husband would continue to heal on his own without surgery and asked to come back in 3 months to monitor his progress. On our second visit, some of nerves hadn't recovered as we had hoped and they recommended surgery. We had our appointment on Tuesday and he had surgery that Friday---so they were VERY accomodating in getting us in quickly and two of the doctors even came in early on Saturday morning to make sure we were discharged in time make our flight home. Good luck!
