Oh Yes, for Brandon it starts with the pain and then goes to fever. We immediately know that there is something wrong. Even the doctor now knows,(BUT DIDN'T BELIEVE AT FIRST). Until the fever comes there is not much to do but give tylenol and/or motrin but yes, it happens.

Didnt connect it until just now but I had shooting pain in my arm like no other the last couple weeks and then ended up with tonsilitis. Have been on the antibiotic for a week now and the shooting pains are almost gone, I think I have had two in the last two days. Very interesting. I dont get sick very often but I will have to pay attention and see if I get the pain when I am sick or if it was just coincidence this time.
Crazy!

Fever, illness, stress, fear, menstruation... can all increase neuropathic (nerve) pain.
When I was in school and I had exams that would make me really anxious, my arm would kill. Better now that I am older and can deal with school stress a bit better, but still, every once in a while it creeps back.

We have this with Juliana. If she is sick, she won't (can't) use her affected arm. And, because she has Horner's, her left eye becomes really, really small.
Marieke...interesting about stress... Juliana told me that at school she keeps her arm/hand between her legs. She says it "feels better" that way. I wonder what feels better. I always thought it was the positioning, but perhaps it is like massaging it.
I'll have to ask her about that.

It may just be that, feels like it is being massaged, a lot of the time, holding it/squeezing it, makes it feel better...

Marieke- Thanks for talking about the stress of school and making the arm hurt. When Kayla is sick it always hurts but I never put the stress of school to it. A few months ago she kept complaining about pain and it was right around the time of the states mandatory test the kids have to pass. Now I know, not that I can change it but at least I know and maybe we can work on some relaxation stuff during those times.

Jody holds his right hand tight or throws his arm with his left when he is anxious. He said it feels "gooder" that way. He doesn't do it when his tape is on. As far as fevers... his arm hurts, eyes smaller and he has had 6 febrile seizures for which he was admitted to hospital twice for testing and observation because of the length of the seizures. No connection- I'm told, to epilepsy. All docs have said that he is perhaps more prone to high fevers b/c of the injury and when the fever skyrockets so fast this causes the seizures.

My 12 year old son has a left BPI. His arm always "shocks" him (as he describes it) when he has a fever. In fact, I came to realize years ago that when he told me his arm was shocking him that some sort of illness was coming on. I would take his temp, and sure enough, he had a fever starting. As long as he has a fever, his arm shocks him every minute or two. Very strange, but has always been a very reliable indicator for us that he is getting sick.
