SLOPING SHOULDER

Post by admin »

HI EVERYONE !

I HAVE 2 CONCERNS. MY DAUGHTER JUST CELEBRATED HER 2ND BIRTHDAY. SHE HAS, IN MY OPINION, GREAT RANGE OF MOTION. MY CONCERN IS HER LEFT SHOULDER IS VERY SLOPED. IT ALMOST SEEMS LIKE HER SHOULDER BLADE IS ON TOP OF HER SHOULDER. ANY THIN SPAGETTI STRAP TOPS DO NOT STAY IN PLACE. MY MOTHER IS A GREAT SEAMSTRESS AND IS TRYING TO ALTER HER PATTERNS IN ORDER TO COMPENSATE FOR THE LACK OF MASS UP THERE. WE TRIED E-STIM, AND I DO NOT KNOW WHICH ONE IT IS, AND SHE HATED IT AND JUST CRIED AND CRIED. WELL, I COULDN'T HANDLE THAT SO WE HAVE PUT IT ASIDE FOR NOW. DO YOU THINK THAT THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO BUILD UP THAT MASS? WHEN WE DO HER EXERCISES, YOU CAN NOW SEE THE BULGE OF BICEP AND AN OUTLINE OF HER DELTIOD, BUT IT STILL NOT ENOUGH FOR THE "BALL" OF MASS ON TOP. I HOPE THIS MAKES SENSE! I AM HOPING TO TRY THE E-STIM AGAIN WHEN SHE IS A LITTLE OLDER. SHE HAD THE MOD QUAD IN OCTOBER AND WE HAVE SEEN GREAT RESULTS. SHE CAN NOW SUPINATE TO THE POINT WHERE LAST NIGHT WE PLACED THOSE LITTLE WOOD BLOCKS IN HER HAND AND STACKED THEM UP AND SHE HELD THEM AND DID NOT DROP THEM. WE WERE SO THRILLED WITH THAT! WE ARE NOW TRYING TO GET HER TO BRING HER ARM BEHIND HER BACK. THIS HAS BEEN AN AREA WHERE SHE STILL CANNOT PERFORM IT. WE DO THE "WHERE IS THUMPKIN" GAME. ANYWAYS, JUST SOME INSIGHT WANTED ON IF EVERYONE HAS THE "SLOPING SHOULDER" ISSUE.

MY OTHER CONCERN WAS WHEN I LOGGED ONTO THE BOARD. THE FIRST PAGE I GET IS THE ONE WHERE ALL THE ERB'S PALSY SIGHTS ARE LISTED. WHEN I READ THEM, ONE SAID " LEARN ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE WITH THIS DISEASE" I DO NOT CARE FOR "BRACHIAL PLEXUS INJURIES" TO BE NAMED AS A DISEASE OF SOME SORT. I AM PROBABLY BEING UNREASONABLE ABOUT THIS. I THINK IT SHOULD BE LISTED AS " LEARN ABOUT OTHER WITH THIS CONDITION" THAT SEEMS MORE APPROPRIATE IN MY OPINION. WHAT DO YA'LL THINK? AM I JUST BEING SENSITIVE?

ANYWAYS, I HOPE EVERYONE HAS A GREAT WEEKEND AND ENJOY THIS PRECIOUS TIME WITH YOUR FAMILY!!

Laura,

I don't think we use the term 'disease' anywhere on the ubpn site. But if we are we will change it, because this is not a disease but an injury. Can you tell me the url of the page you are talking about? Perhaps you came here from a link on someone else's site. If that is so, then ubpn cannot change that page.

WHEN I LOG ON THE MSN HOME PAGE IT TAKES ME TO A LIST (EX. WE HAVE FOUND 3 THINGS THAT FIT YOUR DESCIPTION) AND IT HAS UBPN. AS THE FIRST ONE AND THEN AS NUMBER 3 IT HAS " UBPN - SHARE YOUR STORY" ..... READ THE EXPERIENCES OF OTHERS AFFECTED BY THIS DISEASE ..."AT THE BOTTOM IT HAS HTTP//WWW.ERBSPALSY.ORG/STORY. I ALWAYS JUST PICK THE FIRST ONE LISTED AND I JUST HAPPENED TO READ THE REST OF THE OPTIONS. I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS IS ONE OF YOUR (UBPN'S) SITES, BUT I REALLY APPRECIATE THE QUICK AND CONSIDERATE RESPONSE.
THANK YOU !!!

The caps took care of the "sloping" shoulder for Katie for the most part as well.

Maia definitely had a sloped shoulder when she was dislocated and it is now completely shoulder-like looking once again! thank GOD!!

When is the next time she'll be seeing her bpi specialist? They're the ones that can assess whether or not she is dislocated. Also Maia's CT scan showed her dislocation too.

good luck,

We went to our follow up appt in Houston back in March. Dr. Nath came in and just had her demonstate some things and we did not take off her shirt at all. He just had her reaching for things. All in all, it took about 5 minutes. Is there some kind of sign that I should look for in regards to dislocation? Is it painful? She can move and rotate her shoulder ok. And as far as "dislocation" are we speaking of the shoulder joint or perhaps the shoulder blade. I have some old anatomy books that I will look at to see if I can picture what this might mean. we haven't seen our OT in 6 weeks or so. I should probably try to find another one. ( eci was coming out, and would not see her if we had another OT working with her and I really like the ECI therpist, but I know she's busy) I could try and talk to TCH and ask them and maybe send a picture or something. Thanks Everyone

oh and Dr. nath didn't want to see her for 1 year. So we thought everything was fine and as good as it gets. HHMMMMM.... More worry may be coming my way.

I knew exactly when her dislocation occurred but I didn't know that it was "dislocation" that caused her problems (and that pissed me off to no end because NONE of her therapists knew it was dislocation either aarrrgghhh).

One day she had good range post mod quad and one day the range was gone. Boom! Gone! All of a sudden she couldn't reach straight up, she was involving her chest again her neck...it was really sad. I watched it for a couple weeks in disbelief and listened to Maia telling me that her arm hurt and everyone just said - well it looks like her mod quad grew back. I was shocked. Other parents told me that it's possible for pecs to grow back...one told me that they had to have another surgery to re-release the pecs. So I just thought that this was the answer - her pecs grew back. We waited until a gathering and then saw Dr. Nath and as we were wheeling Maia in, she was in her stroller, Dr. Nath just looked at her and said - yep - she's dislocated. I did the studies anyway - MRI and CT scan and the CT scan showed - posterior dislocation. When we saw Dr. Nath he showed us..he put her bone back in place and let go and we saw it drop right back out. It was nauseating. I understand that posterior dislocations are not common in the real world (only in our bpi world) (I read that 90% of dislocations are anterior) but I can't believe that not a one of her therapists could figure it out! It's because none of them touch Maia! (which is a whole other story on its own)

btw - it's the humerus that comes out of the joint (posterior = to the back, anterior = to the front) and I should add that anterior dislocations are also possible in our population as well.

why don't you send nath a new video....naked arm and chest... or come to a picnic... where do you live?

good luck - let us know what you find out ok?

My daughter's shoulder slopes too. What has happened to her is that her shoulder has subluxed and is now totally out of socket. Get this checked out! We are hopefully going in for surgery soon on primary and mod quad at the same time. Just make sure everything is ok; I'm not saying that this is happening to her, but it can. Good luck!

Hi Laura,

My daughter is 4 and her shoulder slopes and her shoulder blade sticks out too.

Her physio recently told me that it is the deltoid that is responsible for bulking the shoulder up and giving it its shape. Try some exercises like shrugging the shoulders and hitting a ball or balloon directly overhead (place hands on shoulders first with palms up, elbows tucked in and push hands straight up).

Her orthapaedic surgeon also recently told me that the winging of the shoulder blade is due to weakness of the seratis anterior. He recommended doing pushups against the wall for this ie. standing up, leaning against the wall.

Weakness in this area is also what causes the difficulty with reaching behind the back. My daughters OT recommends sitting on a phone book and reaching down behind the back to pick up an object or toy. She also recommends sitting on a phone book and playing 10 pin bowling (toy version) backwards - child has to throw ball behind them.

It is also difficult to reach backwards if the biceps are tight. A full biceps stretch involves streching the arm back past the body with palm facing forward and arm straight and holding for 1 minute. Please ask your physio about this.

Swimming lessons are also great for the arm and shoulder. It is better to have an instructor who will teach overarm (freestyle) from the start as this is where reaching behind the back comes in.

I have been working on this area with my daughter for the last few months and have noticed an improvement using the suggestons above.

Please let me know if you would like me to clarify anything I have said.

Good luck!

Kelly.
