Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: LOBPI. I am 77 yrs old and never had a name for my injuries until 2004 when I found UBPN at age 66.

My injuries are: LOBPI on upper body and Cerebrael Palsy on the lower left extremities. The only intervention I've had is a tendon transplant from my left leg to my left foot to enable flexing t age 24 in 1962. Before that, my foot would freeze without notice on the side when wearing heels AND I always did wear them at work "to fit in" I also stuttered until around age 18-19...just outgrew it...no therapy for it. Also suffered from very very low self esteem; severe Depression and Anxiety attacks started at menopause. I stuffed emotions and over-compensated in every thing I did to "fit in" and be "invisible". My injuries were Never addressed or talked about until age 66. I am a late bloomer!!!!!

I welcome any and all questions about "My Journey".

Welcome, Brinx143,
You will find some adults with BPI on the Message Board For Adults With OBPI. Come there to post your questions. Some Adults don't come to this General Board...Boo hoo :(

There may be some adults with O (Obstetrical-Birth)BPI in Texas-I just can't recall who!...LOL

hey there~
I am in texas, but it's about 5 hours from Houston. Cody is actually your age and is in Goldthwaite? Wherever that is!! I was trying to get some people from texas together but i haven't found to many people yet! It seems so many are from up north. Cody responded to my post 'someone local' on the tramatic message board so maybe you could try to post there. I wish i was closer to Houston so i could at least have Dr. Nath follow Drake's recovery and meet you. I really think even though my son is VERY shy he would like to meet someone going through the same thing as he is.

yea me to, I went to school with a girl who was my age, and she has BPI, but she never had any surgeries like I did, now that I am older it is starting to affect me on psychological level. I grew up with not realizing i had a "problem" my family treated me as if I was a normal child, though I do not think that was the best idea, and now that i am older, it severly bothers me, and I just want to talk to other people and see how they coped with their injury, or even talk to a profesional whom specializies in these types of issues,

I am very interested to have you explain what you mean by the fact that it was not a good idea for your parents to treat you like a "normal" child. My 6 year old daughter has a severe BPI. She has already had three surgeries, and we expect more to come. She has two younger brothers and we treat all of our children the same. We don't baby her, and give her as much help only as is necessary. We figure everyone "out there" will do the same, and she may as well face reality. Of course, we shower her with love and affection, just as we do our other children. I just feel that babying her or treating her as "the injured child" will only set her up for a big fall later, when others don't do likewise. I would like to hear your side, however, and see if there is a downside to our thinking in this regard. Thanks

I think for me if they would have told me about my injury, made me realize that it was there, I would not be facing the problems i have today. Honestly as a kid even with all the surgeries physical therapy etc, I really didnt realize there was something wrong with me. I think keepingyour child informed of their situtation is a great idea. My parents didnt baby me either, and now I am quit head strong because of it, and it has its definate draw backs. I played golf, I rodeoed, I did whatever I wanted and when you told me i couldnt well I did and made matters worese.

Hi there

I was reading your response to the girl in Texas, when you said something that really hit me. My daughter who is 9 has OBPI and we have always tried to treat her as "normal" as possible. Sometimes I think that is wrong, but I don't want her to grow up thinking she is different. But I also don't want her to have emotional issues over it when she is older either. Do you have any suggestions on what I should be doing for her? After all, you have been there. When you are the parent, you really are in a rock in a hard place. Thanks, Beverly

Until last year I treated Maggie as a "normal child" because I truely thought that she had an injury that only a handful of people had and there was nothing else I could do for her.

I found these forums and found out differently, so maybe your parents didnt have any info about others out there so that is why that didnt treat you any differently.

We now still let Maggie do what she wants but now that we know there are other things that we can do to help out her injury we are trying our best to do these things.

It is also good now knowing there are others so Maggie knows she isnt alone in this injury.
