frozen shoulder syndrom?

Post by crystal »

Jade therapist thinks she may have frozen shoulder syndrom. has anyone else had this? her shoulder has been getting worse even after we went to TCH and was thought to have thorasic nerve damage. we tought her how to crawl 2 month ago for the first time. she crawled everywhere. we thought it was the best therapy. but 2 month later she can't crawl at all. it even hurts. her therapisthas had a hunch that something has been going on. of course as a mom i see something i can't explain, she seems to get worse at a record rate.

Crystal,
So sorry to hear about little Jade's troubles, it must be very trying for you as well.
I have previously been diagnosed with long thoracic nerve palsy which caused pain in my scapula and shoulder, weakness in my right arm (couldn't raise it above 90 degrees), and scapular winging.
In the past 6 months I have developed a "frozen shoulder". I basically diagnosed this myself with the help of the web and told my doctor I believe it is what I now have because I was experiencing more pain in my shoulder and my range of motion became severely limited(about 30 degrees to the front and side, and I could no longer reach behind my back(to do up a bra for example).
I am not sure how old little Jade is, but I am assuming that she is too young to tell you her symptoms and pain exactly. If she does have "frozen shoulder" there is no way anyone could assist her to raise her arm above her head or behind her back, unlike with the LTN palsy whereby I couldn't raise my arm, but someone else could raise it for me and I could raise it significantly more if someone was putting pressure on my scapula.
With frozen shoulder, the shoulder is just that; basically locked up and any attempt to force it will usually cause pain and resistance.
There are different theories on the causes and treatment options you may need to discuss with your doctor. I have been told by my doctor and physiotherapist that this will eventually resolve with or without physio. I am still going to physio(???), but after 6 sessions and exercises daily at home, I have noticed very little improvement. These sessions are also painful and leave me in increased pain for a day or two following each session. I am beginning to doubt the usefulness of it and would not recommend it for a wee child (just my thoughts).
There are some very good websites with info on frozen shoulder...if you simply search for frozen shoulder they will come up.
They were very useful in helping me diagnose the problem so would be worth reading.
If you have any specific questions, feel free to e-mail me at any time.
Best wishes on getting the answers you need.

Crystal,
Usually a rheumatologist or orthopedic doctor can diagnose frozen shoulder without the use of diagnostic tests simply by examining the way the shoulder moves.
I would think that the ultrasound would be useful to determine if she has tendonitis or bursitis which can be painful as well and make it difficult to sleep on the affected shoulder.
As far as I understand it, frozen shoulder usually affects people in the 40-60 age range and it would be very rare for a 2 year old to be experiencing this.
Here are some links which may help:

Sorry I can't offer you any more information.
