funny fingers

Post by claudia »

I am not sure if it has to do with the weather...but lately, Juliana's fingers on her affected hand have been twitching. She, of course, does not know that they are doing this unless she happens to look at them. But I notice it.
It has just turned into fall here in NY, as we had 80* weather up to a week ago. Now it is 50*...go figure.

She is also having some trouble regulating temperature in her arm/hand as well. She will ask for gloves or mittens because her hand is cold, and minutes later be pulling them off because she is "burning". She was particularly plagued by this after diving practice. The pool was colder than usual because of a swim meet, and the blowers that keep the divers warm aren't on yet (note the 80* weather). So all the kids were quite cold. She warmed up in a quick shower, but then was having major problems with temp control in her arm. It was hot then cold then hot then cold all night long.

Anyone else experience this? Could it be the weather? Growing? just bpi crap?

thanks,
claudia

It's from damaged nerves. The body cannot control temp as well or adjust as fast as is needed. It misinterprets sensory things, like temp and touch and pain and reacts "wrong". Fatigue and stress and illness can also do this...
Some people are more affected than others. Cold weather sucks!

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: I am ROBPI, global injury, Horner's Syndrome. No surgery but PT started at 2 weeks old under the direction of New York Hospital. I wore a brace 24/7 for the first 11 months of my life. I've never let my injury be used as an excuse not to do something. I've approach all things, in life, as a challenge. I approach anything new wondering if I can do it. I tried so many things I might never have tried, if I were not obpi. Being OBPI has made me strong, creative, more determined and persistent. I believe that being obpi has given me a very strong sense of humor and compassion for others.

BPI Crap
Our change in weather here in NY has my arm going crazy.
It's hot then it's freezing, I feel as if I am going through my changes again!
Only this time it's just in my arm.
The changes really played havoc with my arm's temperature... LOL...

I find my ear is freezing on the bpi side and I have to cover it because it's cold.
It's the Horner's thing on that side of my face and ear.

My hand and fingers shook from time to time on and off.
I don't know what causes it. I was not aware of it until people asked me why my hand was shaking.
It was quivering today but then I was at the dentist.
It's like the itchy palm... it flares up and can last for months.
Then it's gone but I think that is from stress.

Claudia think about how many times you have seen adult/obpi with one sleeve on at various events. I put it on my arm and gets hot.
I take it off and my arm feels as if it's in a freezer yet it's not that cold to the touch.
I had my husband check for me.

I love fleece blankest and jackets this time of year.
I can put on one sleeve for awhile and it's soft and warms my arm right up.

I guess you could say our thermostats in bpi arms were broken too!

I almost forgot, excuse me for being blunt, my right breast was always freezing.
I did not understand why until I began to research bpi. I was always complaining about it because it hurts.
No one could give me an answer nor did they try.
Check the temperature on Juliana's leg on the bpi side mine is always cold.

Maia's hand has tremors and shake anytime she tries to activate her fingers. They get really cold and they are always swollen. I think I'm going to start her on TES again like we usually do for the winter - it seems to balance this stuff out a lot and keeps her arm really warm. (increased circulation)

thanks everyone!

the thing that threw me was the rapid changes in temp. usually her arm is just cold.

and the finger shaking...i haven't seen it since she was 3 and starting to get function back. she would shake like crazy while trying to do things in therapy.

Kath:
her left leg is colder, plus, she has a wacky toenail on the left foot too.

yaaaah, its just an arm...

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: LOBPI. I am 77 yrs old and never had a name for my injuries until 2004 when I found UBPN at age 66.

My injuries are: LOBPI on upper body and Cerebrael Palsy on the lower left extremities. The only intervention I've had is a tendon transplant from my left leg to my left foot to enable flexing t age 24 in 1962. Before that, my foot would freeze without notice on the side when wearing heels AND I always did wear them at work "to fit in" I also stuttered until around age 18-19...just outgrew it...no therapy for it. Also suffered from very very low self esteem; severe Depression and Anxiety attacks started at menopause. I stuffed emotions and over-compensated in every thing I did to "fit in" and be "invisible". My injuries were Never addressed or talked about until age 66. I am a late bloomer!!!!!

I welcome any and all questions about "My Journey".

Claudia,
I have most of the above cold issues too. I have to wear a sock on my left foot to sleep...my right one is hot tho'. I also have a weird toe nail on my left side.
I guess we BPI-ers each have our own unique version of cold/hot goin' on. I like the term "BPI Crap" it just fits...

LOBPI
ps..."Funny Finger Hand" was what I called my left hand when my Scott was small and I accidently did something weird while changing his diapers or bathing him. That way he knew I never meant to hurt him.

We try really hard to keep Jody's arm warm. Once it gets cold it takes forever to warm it up. I use a blow dryer to warm up a pillow or blanket just a little and sethis arm on it. his hand is too small and flaccid to put on a glove so we use either a sock or a baby mitten to keep his hand covered. What drives all of us crazy though it the sleeve of the coat or jacket being too long and too puffy to hem... any suggestions?

we buy those gloves that are tiny and stretch and stretch....I usually buy about a dozen pair because sometimes they are on sale for 5 pairs for $1 or something ridiculous like that....
when she goes out in the snow I put on a few pairs of these gloves and layers hand warmers inbetween (the little packages that you just open and they become warm - you can find them at sports stores and ski gloves actually have little pouches built in for these warmers to slide in)

Marlyn
I find that anything made of very soft fleece will warm my hand and arm up.
I usually put a fleece throw over the right side of my body when I plan on sitting for a long period of time.
I keep my fleece jacket close to the computer when I am on line.
Even when I am typing my hand will get soooo cold.

I love fleece, I have a soft fleece jacket I take with me even to the movies in the summer to keep next to my arm. No one even notices.

Claudia... yesterday someone told me where the Brachial plexus is and how it's really only the upper ARM...
hmmm don't think they were prepared for me to answer... ahhhh I love educating those smarty pants...LOL...

Claudia,
Its just more bpi crap! My fingers twitch on my right hand too. I notice it more when I am tired but it happens randomly as it pleases and is now affecting different fingers. It used to be just my pinky, then it moved into my thumb and ring finger and has just recently started in my index finger. To me its extremely annoying and nothing stops it, uhg. I did learn how to control the twitching in my pinky finger and the kids at school always thought that was the coolest thing. Ah what we do to entertain people.

Temp is a problem here to, my right arm is almost always very cold and covered by something. But if I put a glove on my hand then its super warm and clamy. Gotta love the reactions from a simple glove.

Hope Julianna's isnt annoying her!
