Hi, I'm a mom of a 21 month old with a question about long-term problems associated with OBPI.
My daughter was recommended to have the Mod Quad by TCH, although she did not need to have the nerve surgery. Since this may be her first surgery, we are of course very nervous and worried about our decision. We have had her evaluated by three Dr's and have gotten conflicting opinions as to the timing of the surgery, and the severity of her injury. We have drilled her regular therapists (OT and PT), and will be seeing her neurologist next week. We are not opposed to surgery by any means if it means are daughter will benefit, but we also don't want to just rush into a decision for surgery. TCH is the only place that has recommended surgery at this time. Her therapists and the other surgeons we saw felt that since she is still responding well to therapy, and has excellent passive ROM - waiting would be better so that she can participate more and understand the recovery process better. 3-5 years was the timeframe that was recommended.
One concern I have is that if we wait until she is 3-4 yrs to have this surgery, are we aggravating any problems that may arise in her later life? I hear a lot about early on-set arthritis. Any thoughts?
Advice/opinions please?

I have never had any surgery so I cannot really help with the rough decision.
I think a few who post here may have had surgery.
Making the choice to have or not to have surgery is very difficult and should really be made by you and also the medical professionals you feel the most comfortable with....
This injury is so complex that each of us are effected in different ways. I have all of the secondary injuries.... but I am 62 and I was not given proper PT/OT to help me learn not to compensate and to use my body to do things instead of my hands...
You really should just sit and read all of the medical reports and then make this choice as a family.....
Have you posted ont the General Board .... some of the parents there may be able to help with time frame issues etc...
What ever your choice trust you inner voice and your mother's heart to do the right thing...
I pray that you are inspired to make the choice that is best for your child.
Blessing to you and your family
