I wrote a poem a few days ago, at least describing my feelings on this:

BPI 10/11/07
A burden in unwelcome form
Poses hardest to conform
A world of which they can’t relate
Makes it hard to appreciate
The forms and functions, they don’t know
Have come for us painfully slow
Things can only work so much
Sometimes even sense of touch
They don’t know how it may feel
To be alone through this ordeal
In our dreams we can play
When we wake, it’s back to gray
We should avoid being blue
Over things that we can’t do
Just cant seem to get it out
An easy fix we always doubt
Can they understand this pain
We are different, we’re not plain
Sometimes it feels like we are small
We can’t seem to reach it all
It’s just hard to educate
The ridicule does not abate
Try to lead a normal life
Leave behind the constant strife
I use words to show the truth
Of what has happened through my youth…

tell me what you think!

most of my poetry is about my SI and depression, but ive decided to branch off of that and see what i can do with my other faults and difficulties! For some reason, i cant write about anything happy!

Keep writing about your feelings.
I find that writing, helps me to heal.

Many years ago someone asked me to post the things I felt I lost because I am OBPI.
I began to list, the things I felt I lost.
Before I realized it, I began to list the things I gained.
A parent of an obpi child actually counted and posted I had more blessing then losses.
I hope that you can see some of the things you gained.

OBPI are challenged to do the ordinary... that makes us strong!
We've lived with pain, teasing and not fitting into the box... that makes us understanding and compassionate.
We cannot do things like other people... that makes us creative.
I think we have, as a group, a good sense of humor and that is what has served us.

I've been fortunate and blessed to have met so many obpi/adults and children over the last nine years.
I'm so amazed at the strength, humor and flexibility of both obpi children and adults.
Meeting my peers has truly helped me to heal and really helps the small children's self-esteem.

I am so glad you shared this poem with us... It's how I've felt many times over the years.

Mellissa,

That's a beautiful poem. You've expressed yourself, and me, so well. I agree, sent it to Nancy for inclusion in Outreach.
