First time to Mayo clinic

Post by Drake's Mom »

OK! Drake has an appointment at the Mayo clinic on October 31, which is a Wednesday. This is his first visit there so i am wondering how long should i plan to stay. The clinic isn't open on the weekends so surely it would be safe to say i could book a flight Saturday to come back home right? I have talked to a few people at the clinic and none of them can say for sure how long. The lady today said it just depends on what test the Doctors order, usually anywhere from 3 to 5 days. What has your experience been with the first evaluation appointment been like? I am trying to book air and hotel but have no idea how many days to plan on staying??? I know it's still two months away but the sooner i book it the cheaper it will be right?

Thanks
Teresa

At his first Mayo appts Dustin was scheduled the first day for in intake evaluation with Dr. Daube. Then he had an EMG that lasted 2 hrs (very thurough). Then an MRI. The second day he met with the team (drs. Spinner, Bishop, and Shin). They again evaluated the arm and gave their opinions and a plan of treatment. At this time they scheduled him to come back in 2 mos as that would be 6 mos post accident. They also set a tenative surgery date for the day following this second set of tests. We usually arrive the night before his appts as they seem to start around 7:15am. You should be receiving a schedule in the mail. These were the tests Dustin was scheduled for but it depends on what they schedule Drake for. But think you are right flights can get expensive if you have to wait to close to departure date to schedule. Best of luck!!

thanks for the info, it was helpful. I talked to another lady at the appointment desk and she said the first evaluation on average last anywhere from 3 to 5 days. I guess i will just plan to be there until the weekend and get the insurance for the flight just in case i need to change it.

Hello Drake's Mom, I'm assuming that you will have to see one of their Ped.'s Neuro's first. As well as the Brachial Plexus team (we saw Dr.Bishop, Dr. Shin and Dr. Spinner)whom we did not see until after her EMG and MRI. These two tests were done very early on a Wednesday morning following a twelve hour fast (no eating). We were there for two days, total. I do not know your situation, however, prepare yourself for some in your face HONESTY!! And the troop of people that will come into the room to see your little pumpkin. These guys are excellent, but very honest. I was devastated after seeing them, but looking back 6 months later I'm very thankful for every one of them!! Make a list of any questions you have.
