Recently injured....new to the site...looking for help

Post by DB from Jersey »

Hi everybody,

I'm 22 and was injured in an automobile accident 2 days after this recent Christmas. I suffered a fractured shoulder and BPI as well as experienced brain trauma. Luckily, I'm recovering very well from the head injury, so my focus has finally gotten to my arm. I have use of my shoulder, elbow, and wrist, but cannot move any of my fingers in the left hand. I believe the EMG showed damage to my c5 nerves and above? I have an initial meeting with a Dr. Elkwood in New Jersey who does surgery on BPIs. I was very glad to come upon this site and see stories of the countless people who also suffer from BPIs.

I'm hoping that anyone out there can offer any insight possible, such as things that will help, stages I may go through, and anything else I may experience. Also, I'm wondering what my options and chances may be of eventually having the nerves regenerate of ir surgery has worked for people in this situation. I had a breakthrough today when I saw a flicker of movement in my pointer finger when I try and make a fist. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: LOBPI. I am 77 yrs old and never had a name for my injuries until 2004 when I found UBPN at age 66.

My injuries are: LOBPI on upper body and Cerebrael Palsy on the lower left extremities. The only intervention I've had is a tendon transplant from my left leg to my left foot to enable flexing t age 24 in 1962. Before that, my foot would freeze without notice on the side when wearing heels AND I always did wear them at work "to fit in" I also stuttered until around age 18-19...just outgrew it...no therapy for it. Also suffered from very very low self esteem; severe Depression and Anxiety attacks started at menopause. I stuffed emotions and over-compensated in every thing I did to "fit in" and be "invisible". My injuries were Never addressed or talked about until age 66. I am a late bloomer!!!!!

I welcome any and all questions about "My Journey".
