any of the kids roller skate?

Post by Paula »

Aaron is invited to a skate party this weekend and i do not skate. How hard is it for a BPI kid to learn to skate? He is 5.

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: I am ROBPI, global injury, Horner's Syndrome. No surgery but PT started at 2 weeks old under the direction of New York Hospital. I wore a brace 24/7 for the first 11 months of my life. I've never let my injury be used as an excuse not to do something. I've approach all things, in life, as a challenge. I approach anything new wondering if I can do it. I tried so many things I might never have tried, if I were not obpi. Being OBPI has made me strong, creative, more determined and persistent. I believe that being obpi has given me a very strong sense of humor and compassion for others.

Aaron is still pretty young for skating even without a bpi.

I use to roller skate all the time.
I love it, but then we did not have roller blades we had 4 wheels on skates.

BPI kids can do anything they put their minds to and should be allowed to enjoy the same things as any other child would.
I was not really restricted from many things at all.
We tend to know our limits.

Hi,

My daughter (9)LOBPI just recently learned to skate and is doing great! She was a bit nervous (as was I), but we took a couple classes at our local rink and she is getting better and better each week! I think your son should do just fine - maybe another parent/child who will be skating can keep an eye on him and help get him around the rink! Have fun :)

Hi All!

Katie was 3 when she first put on skates. She and her step-brothers got them from Santa for Christmas that year. I was scared to death, but she couldn't wait to get around on those little wheels. She is by far not a pro roller skater in making just yet, but when we went to a skating party for her school she outlasted her brothers who got frustrated and quit in the first 10 mins. She loved it and was one of the last kids off the rink.

As I have learned many times in the last 4 years and 8 months.....never underestimate a child with BPI and never let your own worries hold them back. They are used to having to work harder and longer than other kids.

You and your son are going to have a great time!! Enjoy!!

Love and Hugs,

Ella received roller skates for Christmas this year and has learned how to skate fairly quickly. She is good at it and she looks just adorable on those skates being so little! Give it a shot! :)
(I am still deathly afraid of a fall though, especially if it were to be on the injured side.)

My oldest daughter was invited to a family skate for her friends birthday. I do not skate because of bad knees....really bad knees, but I had my daughter teach Brandon...she was in 7th grade. Brandon was 5. HE got on those skates and ran her ragged. I feared the fall. It happened, but he got back up and kept skating. He loves it and wants to go all the time, unfortunately...they closed the rink in our town. HAve to find a new one. LEt her go....let her try and have a ball !! GAYLE

Paula, Aaron will have a great time!!! I love roller skating! I have roller blades now but havent practiced in a while so its tough. So when I do break them out and blow the dust off, I fall a lot. Bruses and scrapes but a spirit that you can get down! Its really fun! Much easier to skate in a rink, not on a roughly paved road. lol

I hope Aaron has a great time!!!

I used to love roller skating, then I got serious with figure skating (on ice), then got roller blades. It's all fun and BPI kids can do anything they try!
