A quick question~
Has anybody had any pain relief since the tbpi.
Or what have they done to come out of the medications?
As my husband has tried sometimes to lower his dose, but he can't cope up with excruciating pain and more over he can't concentrate on his work with that pain (he is full time software engineer)
As it's gonna be two years complete in Feb 2007, but my husband is still suffering the horrible pain from that. He said it feels like someone is poking you with needles ...stabbing with knife, electric shocks and the injured hand is in the deep fryer.
Though he has already undergone two major surgeries on him for his 4 nerve roots avulsion in 2005
I just feel so frustated seeing him in this horrible pain, but can't do anything for him..
I know as per Ellen B some people are just so lucky, that there pain eradicates completely over the time.
Any kind of help would be gratly appreciated.
Regards,
And a very happy new year and merry X-mas to you all!
Shafali.

Re: Any difference in pain??
I have recently started taking LYRICA, only 150 mg 2x day... for me this has helped a ton! I think I do not have all the pain that many here experience, hoever it has recently started kicking my arse! Its been almost 6 years so I guess I shoulnt complain! SOme other things that I Found helpful...
*Keeping mentally busy
*Working out, first thing in the morning, get the endorfins flowing
*Hot tubs, not too hot, more around 90-95 degrees
*Massages on my hand
*Massages on my back, check out a massage therapy school, advanced students $20 for an hour... not the shoulders, just the back
*See a PAIN MANAGEMENT SPECIALIST!
Also... I was taking massive amounts of Oxycontin before, that helped but I wanted to LIVE and I Couldnt taking what I was... so I got off of it. It was HARD but once I was threw the withdraws, the pain seemed more mangeable! I Hope these ideas help!

I have never heard of LYRICA. What type of drug is it? What type of side effects do you notice from it. I gave up all drugs years ago but somedays are still a bit rough. I found marijauna as the only option with the least side effects but I try to limit it.
I find I am always working and whenever I am not working the pain is taking over. It gets old I just wanna relax.

Re: Any difference in pain??
I joined this club 4+ years ago. The closest thing I can correlate the pain with is the amount of sugar I consume. If I drink a couple soft drinks in an hour, wham, here comes the pain.
I use neurontin occasionally during the day if the pain is too bad and I take 600 mg at night to numb me to the effects of the pain.
Has anyone else noticed a connection between sugar and pain?

Re: Any difference in pain??
I was on 32 mg of methadone per day so that I could function. Since I started laser therapy, I'm down to 4 mg per day and plan to be off all together in less than a month.
I've had 12 treatments and will continue to have two per month for a bit to see where it goes. I still have the pain, but at a managable levels and the spikes are short.
I can live with it now.
Good luck
Henry

John try looking here, I think it is pretty informative!!
http://www.lyricapro.com/cwpb/appmanage ... yricaWorks
\Lyrica is the part of Neurontin that works with nerve pain. Check it out! I notice NO side effects, I am on a pretty low dose too! Mary Jane helps yes, but I cant because of work!
Let me know how you get along...
Henry what is this Laser Therapy??

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: January 1980 Yamaha RD200 vs 16 wheeler truck, result, 1 totally paralysed right arm. I was 21, now 54. I had no surgery, I don't regret this. Decided to totally ignore limitations (easily done aged 21) adapted very quickly to one handed life, got married, had 3 kids, worked- the effect of the injury on my life (once the pain stopped being constant) was minimal and now, aged 54, I very rarely even think of it, unless I bash it or it gets cold, then I wish I'd had it amputated :) Except for a steering knob on my car, I have no adaptations to help with life, mainly because I honestly don't think of myself as disabled and the only thing I can't do is peel potatoes, which is definitely a good thing.

Hi all
BDair, I personally have never seen a connection between sugar and the pain, but I do know of other people who have noticed this.
Like most long termers, I can to a large extent control the pain by keeping my brain occupied, breathing and visualisation- if you got the last "Outreach", there's a great article by Chris Janney about this, it's basically a similar principle to drug free childbirth and it works for me. It doesn't get rid of the pain but it enables you to kind of distance yourself from it. For bad spasms I too use marijuana and trials aimed specifically at tbpi in the UK have shown that it works for our pain.
Lyrica-if you want to read about side effects etc the very worst place you can look is the manufacturers own website, where strangely they seem not to list the side effects very prominently. There are actually quite a few associated with Lyrica some of which are listed here http://www.adrugrecall.com/pregabalin/pregabalin.html
Happy pain free days guys :0)

Re: Any difference in pain??
My neuropathic (nerve) pain I've been taking a combo of lyrica + epilim. I was taking 2 X 75mg lyrica (1 capsule after breakfast + dinner) + 2 tablets of 200mg epilim afer each meal. I decided to ween off epilim as a test and found with only using lyrica I almost get the same amount of pain relief except I can 'feel' my nerves in my right arm a bit. Hard to explain but it's not so much straight out pain, just that I can feel my nerves in my arm and it's slightly annoying feeling. I do get some pain from time to time but not much. Taking lyrica + epilim stopped the lightning bolts/stabbing pains so I am very happy with that medication. I found I was slightly lethargic with taking them and taking a nootropic (smart/brain drug) Piracetam has countered all of the 'bad' side effects.
I can recommend anyone with neuropathic pain coming from BPI to try lyrica (and/or epilim at first) and see how that goes.

Re: Any difference in pain??
Henry...Sam is finally seeing a pain specialist. She said if I can find any studies on laser therapy she would consider it. I searched the Internet but couldn't find any. Have you? Also, Sam has been on Kadian which is a long acting form of morphine. It causes terrible constipation. If anyone has a good remedy for this, please pass it on (so to speak). His doctor also has him on a topical compound C-Keto/Keta/Gaba. He rubs it into the brachial plexus area. Sometimes he thinks it helps and other times it's of no use. I've done some reading on the DREZ proceedure but it seems too risky. His pain is really disabling. Sounds like it is for other people as well. I feel so useless in helping him. I feel so bad for all of you who suffer. I think many doctors and others just don't get it. Michele

Hi,
The therapy is refered to as LILT Low Intensity Light Therapy. It breaks down scar tissue and that seems to help me. I read it in a article by a doctor who did it for a spinal injury. I approached a therapist and she said they'd try. It was a gamble but works for me.
