Older children...what next?

Post by Marydroz »

I was wondering something, considering the recent posts regarding older children...
If you do decide to take your child to Shriners, then what happens when they age out?
do you then have to switch to another doctor who doesn't know your child at all? I mean, I realize at that point they won't be "children" but they are still people who will have established a relationship with a doctor...
is there anyone who has made the transition or how have you dealt with this?

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: LOBPI. I am 77 yrs old and never had a name for my injuries until 2004 when I found UBPN at age 66.

My injuries are: LOBPI on upper body and Cerebrael Palsy on the lower left extremities. The only intervention I've had is a tendon transplant from my left leg to my left foot to enable flexing t age 24 in 1962. Before that, my foot would freeze without notice on the side when wearing heels AND I always did wear them at work "to fit in" I also stuttered until around age 18-19...just outgrew it...no therapy for it. Also suffered from very very low self esteem; severe Depression and Anxiety attacks started at menopause. I stuffed emotions and over-compensated in every thing I did to "fit in" and be "invisible". My injuries were Never addressed or talked about until age 66. I am a late bloomer!!!!!

I welcome any and all questions about "My Journey".

Marydroz,
Mayo Clinic has BPI Specialists and a BPI Clinic for adults; Dr. Nath & his BPI Team of Specialists in Texas do too.

On the UBPN "Medical Resources" Link on home page, click and go to "Medical Resources for Adults". I think there are others somewhere but I'm blank now...LOL. :)

HUGS all around,

no external rotation against gravity, can only go to 90 degree fwd flexion, no hand-to-mouth
1 surgery at age 14 (latissimus dorsi transfer). In 2004, at age 28 I was struck with Transverse Myelitis which paralyzed me from the chest down. I recovered movement to my right leg, but need a KAFO to walk on my left leg. I became an RN in 2008.

I know for me when I aged out of the Shriners at 18 (in Canada it's 18) I could still see my surgeon as he also operates on adults at another hospital. Maybe that's the same for some of the others.

I am one of the lucky ones too, when I age out of the Shriners system in another year and 3 months I will still be able to see my doctor as he aslo works at Mayo. Hes not a bpi specilist but works very closely with the three at Mayo and had even published papers on bpi so I am confident with him.

For others as they reach adulthood they have to switch doctors but thats kinda like any other medical issue, there are peds docs and adult docs.

Hope this helps!
