Injured in Utero??

Post by francine »

I heard from a mom who went to a new neurologist in my area that people seem to be very happy with. This doctor told her that her over 12 pound newborn was injured in utero!

Got word from her that she spoke to bpi specialist in another state about this comment and was told that if her baby had gotten this in utero that the arm would have been way smaller - shriveled. I never thought of that - I guess that makes so much sense.

just an FYI on two accounts...

I heard that the babies who are damaged in utero are damaged towards the end of term when their movements are restricted or on the way out during labour, so maybe the arm wouldn't be smaller in those circumstances? There have been several families posting recently who say there was no pulling on the baby's head at all and no birth trauma, do their babies have shrivelled arms?

*WARNING* this is kind of graphic

Francine,

A friend of mine was a twin. While her mother was pregnant (about 7 months along) one twin died. Well...the twin that died was laying accross the other twins' (my friend) knees. This caused her legs to be underdevloped. Her knees are visably deformed (I hate that word, but couldn't think of another) and she has pronounced difficuly in walking and such.

So yes...If the baby you are talking about in your post was injured in utero, you would see that the arm would have been visibly different than the other. Shriveled.

Just thought I'd add to your account!

Do you know the how he justified the injury occured in utero? Just curious - I went to a high risk ob that told me Melanie was injured in utero and our neurologist stated other wise. Thanks

She told me that she didn't ask too many questions at the time because she was pretty shocked to hear it but said that she would question him more next time she saw him. Cindy, I also told another person who will be seeing him about it and she said that she would discuss it as well - to see what his general opinion is of this. Be curious to know why he might think this. I'll post if I get any updates.

Thanks, I'm very curious. Someone told me their doc said the injury occured in utero and the reasoning was that she wasn't fully at 10 and was told to push. Maybe that's what the neuro meant. I also know some docs check to see for some type of genetic link for the injury but I never heard much more about that and some day I'm going to research when I have the time.
