Tingling Fingers

Post by Tricia »

My son sometimes complains of tingling in his fingers so intense that he bites his thumb until it bleeds. When he was younger, I told myself this was a good sign, that perhaps he was gaining better sensation in his hand.

However, I was reading one of my nursing books the other day (I'm in nursing school) and there was a section about how poor posture, specifically drooping shoulders can put enough pressure on the nerves to cause a tingling sensation in the hand and fingers.

I know a lot of our kids have problems with drooping shoulders and tingling fingers, so I just wanted to pass along this information. The next time my son starts to bite his hand, I'm going to try to position him so that gravity is not pulling his shoulder down so much. I'm hoping this cuts down on the biting. If anyone else wants to try this, please let me know how it works! Thanks

Tricia,
My son had tingling after he had a compressed nerve in the shoulder joint....so you're probably right about the pressure of the shoulder pressing on something...the problem is that so many of our little guys and gals have deformities in their bone structure :( I don't know how to deal with that except surgery...
My son also pulled at his thumb, and picked at it...He has to consciencely make himself not do it....And he's not little!! I feel for the ones who are little and do it.

Helping poor posture - Before we started chiropractic with Matthew he was slouching a lot when he was sitting and he was also tilting his head a little when he was tired. Once we started chiropractic his posture improved right away and he's been holding his head well no matter how tired he is. Chiropractic helps keep the spin in alignment so the nerves don't get pressed on.
