La Rabida Children’s Hospital
E. 65th Street at Lake Michigan
Chicago, Illinois 60649
Program Description
Infants with obstetrical brachial plexus injury are immediately identified in the newborn nursery during
the delivery process. The injuries most commonly occur as a result of a difficult birth. The traction
forces on nerves can cause a spectrum of injury, ranging from temporary conduction deficits to nerve
root avulsions from the spinal cord. A thorough evaluation of the infant and child is critical to assess
specific areas of weakness, abnormal movement patterns, and alignment. The therapist needs an
understanding of muscle function and development that occurs as the infant continues to mature and
develop. This workshop will describe the medical management and treatment process of the
infant/child with brachial plexus injury.
Workshop Objectives
At the conclusion of this program the participants will be able to:
• Understand the medical management of the infant/child with brachial plexus injury
• Understand typical and atypical development
• Understanding of current treatment options for children with brachial plexus injury
Instructors
