After two years from the date of her birth (the first decision stated that while Kaitlyn's injury was serious and did result in significant disability it was not expected to last more than 12 months) katie finally has a hearing for her SSI. I think we will most likely be denied due to income BUT we are still going through with it just so there will be more information out there for the kids that follow, plus you just never know...
Any help on documents I should locate and take with us is greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone could share their experience with us and the reasons you were approved or denied on that would help us out as well so we know what to address.
Thanks!!
Christy

"It's not expected to last more then 12 months".....
Damm! now you tell me....LOL...
And where did they get that information from...?????
The best advice I got was to list all of the thing I could not do with the bpi arm... I did.. boy was I shocked I had never thought about what I could'nt do before...LOL
Here are a few of the site that may help.
The first is the Blue Book... SS uses this to evaluate and to check to see if your imparement is listed....
http://www.ssa.gov/disability/professio ... ntents.htm
Listing of Impairments-Childhood
http://www.ssa.gov/disability/professio ... stings.htm
I hope you win - It is about time that our government recognized this as a disability and treated bpi children the same as others with listed disabilities...
It is listed on this page of the National Institue of Neurological Disorders- but the information is really not much more then that first page.. they list it but no on going study...
http://www.ninds.nih.gov/health_and_med ... th_doc.htm
Go prepared... all medical records... all types of Awareness material... The doctors must give you some information on what they think you can expect... but less then 100% full use... is still disabled and forcing the use of the "unaffected" to be more then normal....
Good Luck

Re: Help with SSI Administrative hearing!
i was successful with getting ssi benefits and the determination does not consider your income, benefits will be determined by your income however it is different for children and the household size is also a factor. at any rate if you are pursuing a legal case, a favorable decision may be a positive thing, along with medical records i also included information from tch on the long range effects of the injury and told the judge that the long term effects could not be known until around age 5. marlin's case will not even be reviewed until she is 5. so even if you might not qualify for benefits right now the possibility that in the future something happens you could.
Re: Help with SSI Administrative hearing!
Thanks...I have one more question though--the book or rule states it must be BOTH upper extremeities--did the judge overrule on this? I feel confident that most of our kids qualify other than that bilateral qualification. Thanks again!
