It's that time of year again...I need to make an appt. to have my annual exam. I have not seen a doctor since the birth of my daughter ROBPI in March of '05. There is no way I am going back to my doctor and really am scared to trust anyone. Every time I think about going in I feel as if I am going to have a panic attack. Has anyone else dealt with this? Do you have any suggestions on questions to ask a new doctor or how to tell them I am terrified to have the exam? ANY advice welcome!

Scared
Re: Scared
I just had my annual in February, almost 2 years after my son was born. I was very scared and nervous. I was shaking and sweating. After I spoke with the nurse and told her and the doc my history I had a good cry and they gave me a few minutes to get myself together. It was a great experience and she knew all bout BPI, too bad she's not an OB. Best of luck to you.

P.S A pap smear is over quick if you count backwards from 100, it will probably be over by the time you hit 30. But please let the new doc know why you are nervous and if he or she can't understand then maybe you can get another doc. I found mine by calling the hospital referral #.

I think you have to remember that there are some wonderful doctors out there and look at this as an opportunity to find one! Ask if you can make an appt to meet with them first in their office w/o an actual exam. Let them know what happened and "interview" them. If they are a good dr. they will be willing to listen to you and talk with you. If they don't have time for that then you keep looking for someone else!

Are you planning on having more children? I agree with the guest that said to sit down with them first. Especially if you are planning on having another child then you need to know you have someone who understands what you went through and is sensitive to your concerns. Good luck!
Re: Scared
I had the exact same fears....It was really hard and it took me over two years to choose another doctor and actually keep the appt and go. Once I went, I felt better about my health and knew that I did the right thing.
You have to remember that your child needs you to be heathly! Good Luck!

Re: Scared
I have chosen doctors who I trusted and even last time went to my GP instead of an OB thinking that this might help, but it didn't. No matter what I do I go through a post traumatic stress disorder experience. From the moment I make the appointment until the moment it is finished, I'm in panic mode and the panic just increases as the days get closer. I tried a small dose of Xanax and even that didn't help. I think that for next time I might try hypnosis and then use a self hypnosis technique to get me in there. I know that I better get over this or I will have a stroke when my kids are ready to have their own babies. God help us all then. Can't even imagine.

Re: Scared
here again. when i finally found a doc i could trust he was killed in a car accident shortly afterward. anyways. if you eer plan on having another child please go to the docotr. i had so many problems, dizziness nausia and anxiety. i am sure the doctors were tired of seeing me. its like they didnt believe me. finally my doctor was on vacation and i saw his collegue and he took me seriously. i had a ct scan and they found a calicified gallstone. 6 weeks ago that was removed. also alot of cervical scarring and found a nobothian cyst. usually women get these befor menopause. i just turned 32 and if that was not treated i would have gone through this very early. besides i would like to try for a girl so i had a hyseter sonygram when they took pictures inside ans cleaned me out. i was shaking because being in stirrups reminded me of having my son 3 years before. i was relieved that my problems were not ob related. you can always have post traumatic stress and this can trigger it. i am now on meds for this. it may never go away but you can control it. please go get checked out, once you go you will not be afraid to go back. ann
